Who am I?

If you have read any of my writing submissions you may have noticed that they are headed something like...

"Poem by Jox (Writing as JL)"

For JL you might also see TC, MB, AS, PF, MG, RL, KH, KO and a few others.

You see, when writing I am never ever Jox. I simply put that on here as a tag. I am always thinking as one of what I call "my stable of writers". I use their full names when submitting work for publication but as my threads always appear as "Jox" I simply state the title as above.

JL, MB and KH are actually female writers (I am male - or was when I last checked). KO is neutral - I never reveal KO's gender. The rest are male. More importantly, they all write in different genres (but across formats within the genre).

So, you might see a mildly comic piece by MG in the form of a poem or a sit-com script. MG is very laid-back and chilled-out. A nuclear detonation under his chair would scarsely cause him to flinch. He's not especially intelligent, though. TC always writes politically (and is often very angry). TC is very intelligent and generally Socialist - but will happily satire anything political, socialism included. TC hates the sort of mind-numbing unintelligent drivel that MG writes. MG doesn't mind in the least if TC hates it - and probably cannot understand TC's work.

I could drive you all crazy by outlining MG and TC more fully then going on to the others in the stable but I shall stop here. My point is this, does anyone else feel the need to enter distinct personas to write in different genres, or am I the only one here who is quite this insane? All polite replies really appreciated.

Regards,
James Oxenholme. (Or am I?)

The quote at the top (truncated by the programme) is "People come and go, talking of Michaelanglio." by TS Elion, an American-born, British-nationalised poet and playwrite. (The waste Lane, Murder in the cathedral, etc).

Hi Jox!

Errrrr, now what did you say your name was again? (heh-heh)  Sorry, I couldn't resist. oops.gif  upside.gif  Your question is very interesting.  I'm not a very prolific writer but I do find that different pen-names seem to inspire different Muses'.  I do know that it seems to be a fairly common practice for writers to publish under different pen-names, though I hadn't really thought about why they did this.  Now I know!!! Hat.gif   It is kind of fun to put oneself into a different persona on occasion.  I will be interested to see others respond to this question.  Very interesting........ Thanks Morgan & Brahms.

Now, anyone else out there wish to throw their names into this one?... Does anyone use more than one pen name? and, if so, Why? This really goes to the heart of our writing. All contributions happily received! Cheers, Jox.

I use more than one pen name--

I started out with using "Salem" then transferred my personality from online as "Salem DeSaluzza" into my real person enough that Most of my real life friends call me Salem... and I am the most comfortable going by Salem.

I have also used a couple other pen names for a couple other things--  "Melissa" character that I used to use on some religious forums in my atheist stage (I'm so glad I didn't use my real name in that stage, I was a real... #######? really pointed about thingss, anyways.)

I generally use different pen names with different online personalities-- Salem is my learned personality-- going to be a math major with an inclination towards poetry...

Whoooo..... Ok. I think I sort of rambled on and on there... I get a tendency to do that every now and then...

Salem

Salem, bore da!

To me "Salem" says witchcraft... interesting title for an atheist!

I am sorry to hear that you had problems with an atheist page. I believe in freedom of speech and, if Christians are allowed to speak their mind, so should atheists be.

A Maths Major writing poetry - is that someone with a Mathematics degree? If so I’m sure they can write poetry - but, I would imagine, mainly in a formulaic style. It is said that music is based on mathematics. (Bach is said to be an obvious example of this).

You didn’t ramble-on at all (you should see my postings!) I appreciate your joining in; thank you.

Cheerio for now, Jox.

I've always used 'Cleo' in my writings.  Pharoah.gif  Pharoah.gif  Pharoah.gif

My fascination with the women of Egypt grew to the penname choosing. I actually have a name game poem that I wrote based on a challenge that our 'Nefertiti' started at PK.

I will post it in 'The Acropolos' challenge forum. I'ts a pretty fun thread!

Another interesting question: How do you choose your 'character' names?

Cheers! Jester.gif

Hi Cleo,

No sooner have I posted a new thread which mentioned you had made 550 contributions than you post this - you 553rd! Can't keep up with you!

I don't quite know how but I think we had guessed you were interested in Egyptology!

I'll look forward to your fun posting.

How do I choose my character names? This question applies to us all but since I started this thread...

I have chceked all names with the British Library (the American equivilent is the Library of Congress). They tell me that no other writers have these names - they are unique.

My espionage novelist is named after the lead-character on a 1970s Sci-Fi tv drama series. ("UFO").

My nudism writer is named after a Derbyshire village.

My para-normal writer is named after the pet-name for badgers!

My Limerick (and other bawdy items) writer is an anagram of "Limerick"

I think the rest simply came to me whilst playing with words.

What about others' names?

my religious persuasions have always been long and drawn out-- I've come to terms that I believe in music-- when people ask that's what they hear...

I don't really remember how ti became Salem, but it really stuck.  :blush21:

I will be a math major... once out of high school... (although I'll have 3 years of Calc beforehand...)

Academically, I have strange patterns... Math is my true love, and I do horribly in English-- yet all my free time is on various poetry forums...

Ok, I think rambling in this thread probably wasn't what I started out to do, so I'll stop now...

As it is written.

I think that's the shortest and best answer I've ever seen on MM. Now, have you tried New Daz on those bandages?

LOL!

I'm still trying to figure out WHO "A" is?

And what REALLY happened to Nefertiti anyway?  :jester:

I think he's wrapped up in mystery J....
