Cinnamon Scents

It was a wrapped and ribboned box
with a crimson bow as big on top.
Inside, a humble ornament,
an emerald ball on lace-like cloth
he hoped would find approval.

They'd have a small event this year
since work was scarce for both;
no gaudy frills, no useless gifts
that cost a ton of money,
no debt-loads pushed ahead
into a clean new year.

A simple scent of cinnamon
will go with winter's evergreen,
a holly branch or two or three
with carmine colored berries,
and background music, choirs sing
a hymn, a carol, season's songs –
let all the city simmer by,
they'll sit beside their fire.

It's but a humble ornament
wrapped up with all his love.
He tapped the box, then set it down.
