Your Songs

My memory lies neither in the stone
etched for uncultured strangers, whose purview
is limited to written words; nor on
sad eulogy. Those never shall imbue

the soul with songs you've planted in my heart
which stem the tide of grief. The angst pervades
each moment of my life that we’re apart
to spoil facades and bittersweet charades.

Yet, here you are, still fresh within my mind
to thwart the black abyss that yawns beside
eternal sleep. The hands of death may bind
the shell in which, no longer, you reside

but there still floats within my dreams each night
your visage, smiling, as your songs take flight.

Words used in order of appearance: memory, uncultured, stone, song, planted, tide, bittersweet, fresh, beside, floats

When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Another beauty, Larry. So wishful, poignant but at the same time comforting as regards the finale.

"The hands of death may bind
the shell in which, no longer, you reside

but there still floats within my dreams each night
your visage, smiling, as your songs take flight."

That is so true. My late husband wrote poetry, especially sonnets in Spanish, and dedicated several to me. (He also wrote excellent English poems, but not sonnets).

And I often remember them when I'm half-dreaming...that period before awakening that seems so very real.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful piece.

The Lord replied, my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

"There is no life higher than the grasstops
Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind
Pours by like destiny, bending
Everything in one direction."

Sylvia Plath, Crossing the Water, Wuthering Heights.
