Greetings arrive on gossamer wings
the bright length of the day at hand
breath -- a birth -- joy within us sings
round a parlor tree -- the piano grand.

Oh how I wish -- and wish on it again
the lord himself on this his natal day --
ah so many lonely centuries it’s been --
would return in the jolly man’s sleigh.

Hello Richard,

I missed out on this one. Lovely piece. Amusing to think of Jesus returning on Santa's sleigh!

I've read one of the gospels not included in the Bible, forget now, but may have been the one according to St. Tomas...not sure...which would be quite fitting for your poem. That gospel pictures Jesus as a cheerful boy, playful, even dancing with the crowd as a young man!

So he'd enjoy the sleigh ride, right?

A movie was made of that gospel, very original but not of the best. Never mind.

The Lord replied, my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

"There is no life higher than the grasstops
Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind
Pours by like destiny, bending
Everything in one direction."

Sylvia Plath, Crossing the Water, Wuthering Heights.
