Hello!
Well... it's difficult to start. I'm from Russia, and now I'm a teacher of English. First I began translating English poets into Russian, I was 24. I succeeded, but I couldn't be better than our best translator S. Marshak (he was a genius). Then I didn't translate or write anyting for a long time. In 2003 I saw a translation of a good Russian poem into English and didn't like it at all. So I did it myself and wrote some of my own works. But seriously I started writing only last year. I prefer writing iverhymes, but usually call them 'iverhycks' (this name sounds like 'limericks', at least partly). Konstantin. |

Welcome to Mosaic Musings!!! You will find this to be just the right place to become a writer's home - I always thought translating poetry from one language to another has to be so difficult, especially that many things stated in one language doesn't always mean the same or come out with the same impression in another. I would love to see something from one language into English, and see how the translater works out those problems. I find it quite interesting. Also will enjoy reading your own works. Best Regards, Liz Hello, Liz. Thank you for your letter. You see, translating is a very interesting and difficult activity, and sometimes (especially if it's poetry) it can be funny. Sorry, I've forgotten the name of the poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe that was translated into Russian by our great poet M. Lermontov in the XIX century, then into Japanese (the result was a tanka or a haiku, I don't remember), then into German and at last into Russian again. In this 2nd Russian translation there was no word from the 1st. My first works are just translations into English, but now I almost never work this way. Konstantin. |
