She waits patiently, listening for hurried hooves on rooftops with bells softly jingling, but hears the pounding of her neglected heart in the frostiness of December’s air.
Her hands purple and chapped, placed over a small fire she carefully keeps going as she furiously rubs to generate feeling.
Through faint colors of red, green and speckles of gold a surge of contentment warms her insides as she harks back to Christmas lights curved, on snow-powdered bushes in front of her childhood home, a slight smile widens her burdened face.
She closes her eyes and breathes-in deeply the scents of peppermint, spice, pine and cinnamon, reminiscent of family and moments savored and consumed heart-fully.
Her fantasy is soon replaced by sounds of gunshots, a dwindling fire shared in a rusted barrel, and city lights fading into the infected blackness of night, but like the magic of the season, she holds on to a slice of life and a sliver of hope.

Hi Lindi, This is such a strong poem, it's filled with lots of imagery and feeling - I felt sad for the woman at the end when you reiterate your title in the punch. A hopeful ending that perhaps she'll carry with her. Enjoyed, ~Cleo

I always think of the blessings I have during the Christmas season, but also, how many unfortunate spirits exist in desperate circumstances. May you and Peter taste the many flavors of the holiday season!
