10 T Tonka again >>>

Camarones

At forty years, the clock speeds up a notch
and one may gaze in wonder at this junk
accumulated, stashed in drawer and trunk
and seldom taken out to read or watch.

At fifty years, you’re crazy to go on
collecting more, it’s time to take a break
and have a piece of tasty chocolate cake
or beer to chase a yummy curry-prawn.

At sixty years, the sofa beckons more
and friends are fewer, many gone for good,
becoming amber in a Pliny wood.
Perhaps it’s time to tally up the score.

Those camarones – ah, I taste them still
with fresh-squeezed lime – an epicurean fill!

Hi Merlin,

Now this is what I call serendipitous occurrence. I read your poem which made me hungry and my wife made a nice shrimp salad for supper. She sauteed the shrimp in an Italian garlic sauce with mushrooms and the Louisiana trinity (onions, celery & bell pepper). All this over fresh cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and lettuce. It had to be as yummy as your curried prawns.

Keep the Tonkas rolling. I won't even try to keep up!

Larry

When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.

Ah yes, the projects lie neglected in the garage while food and the sofa beckon. I know the feeling

Those tonkas rolling on and on
like honey off the sour tongue

Cheers,

Wal

Hi guys,

I believe slowing down as we age happens to women too. At least it does for me. I've started two books but wonder when I'll finish them. It's summer here and I usually read a lot at this time of year, but this summer I've only read one book, though it was a good one, "Sarah's Key". This summer I'm napping more than is usual for me.

As for prawns, or shrimp, you made my mouth water, but I don't find that appetite has changed with age.

Like the poem! And I can relate to the accumulation of junk too. I've just got too much junk. Ha!

Thank you for pausing to read & comment, Larry, Wally, Peggy.
There are many of us in the same boat with many treasures collected over time. When I was still in the apartment, my next door neighbor was the opposite, having only sparse things - like 1 cook pot etc. She always ratted on me for having half a dozen of different things, which I use when necessary. There are all kinds!

As to the camarones - that goes back to Tampico, many (very many) years back. We sat on the beach at some beach hut, chomping them and drinking beer. Those are the ones I remember most, altho have had a variety of different ones since.

Thx for looking in.

Merlin
