The Wandering Minstrel ** (a romantic companion ballad to Tom Rhymer)

I picked white heather roses
As I walked through the heath;
Then plucked sweet, purple violets
And wove all in a wreath.

I saw the lady of my dream
Walk slowly through the dew;
In envy, sunshine faded pale,
The sky changed pink from blue.

Oh, while she paused and sweetly smiled,
So gently then bowed down,
I placed upon her fairy head
My fragrant, flowery crown.

A grouse stirred from her nest of grass
With loud and drumming sound;
It woke me from my wishful dream—
Just flowers I have found.

Such a pretty ballad, Jerry!

Makes me want to be inside that scented, flowery picture you've painted!! ballet.gif

Even if it was a dream or a vision. Softly, delicately phrased, with that touch of nostalgia that gives the reader the right feelings. cloud9.gif

The Lord replied, my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

"There is no life higher than the grasstops
Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind
Pours by like destiny, bending
Everything in one direction."

Sylvia Plath, Crossing the Water, Wuthering Heights.

Hi there, Sylvia;
so pleased to see you, and I appreciate your comment. At times I like to cross over into the other dimension--one that allows me to delve into gentle romanticism. I'm glad this little poem delighted you. I do hope all is well with you and your husband. Thanks so much, charliebrown.gif

Good morning, Maureen;
and for me it is still very early morning. My silly dogs were barking to beat the band, and I had to check and see what that's about; it was nothing, of course. Goofballs, lol.
Thanks for liking my fanciful little prelude to that earlier-posted Thomas ballad. I hope you are well?

Ah,

Romantic interludes from you,
with something soft and sweet
will help our Rhymer not eschew
those blessings at his feet

for would he woo that Fairy maid
of beauty past our ken,
a floral woven blossom braid,
sweet verses from his pen

would all bode well to catch her heart
with songs of palest blue.
A minstrel who doth love impart
will find his Princess true.

Thoth,
I see you are another minstrel of renown. Your poem is a fine reply, and I thank you. May all our ladies know that chivalry and Minne Songs are alive in us. We'll carry the torch; won't we? Thanks, :)
