Waiting to Take Off

Waiting at the intersection
to the main runway,
I sat in the backseat
with my young daughter
and my sister.

Up front was my father
and my sister's fiancee.

"Control, this is Cessna one seventy November two three.
Permission to back away from thirity two, over."

"Granted, Cessna one seventy. Over."
came the reply.

"Daddy, why'd you do that,"
I asked.

"I have a lot of valuable cargo
on board this airplane,"
he answered.

"I don't understand,"
I replied.

"Well, much of my family's in here,
and those jets doing touch and go's
in the cross wind might hit us.
There's no need to take a chance."

That was over 37 years ago,
but I'll never forget Dad's words.

"There's no need to take a chance"
is the mantra I've heard
through the years
when I'm in the driver's seat
with loved ones in the car.

Thanks, Dad!

Peggy

Hi Peggy!

Super original poem. I like the dialogue in it. Highly interesting the way you've remembered Dad's words, perhaps from a long time ago. (Or the MC has, maybe it isn't a personal story?)

I wish everybody would think & act that way....wow...

I noticed a typo, but will come back asap. to comment or nit... or maybe just repeat that this is a fine poetical piece.
Love it!

Hugs, Syl***

The Lord replied, my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

"There is no life higher than the grasstops
Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind
Pours by like destiny, bending
Everything in one direction."

Sylvia Plath, Crossing the Water, Wuthering Heights.

Peggy this is a nice tribute, or memoir. Only to me it sounds like prose, not poetry. In any case I don't think you need that last line, Thanks, Dad! It is kind of implied in the "when you are behind the wheel" lesson. Very nice work.

Sergio
