For 1429 years "Haj" or "The Pilgrimage To Makkah" has been one of Islam's 5 key worships. It's comes in the last month of the Hijri year... Now is this time and tomorrow 3 million muslims will be standing on Arafat (a hill in the outskirts of Makkah) spending a whole day, from day break till sunset, praying and reading the Koran and supplicating God for mercy, forgiveness and more...

On this Sacred Land
pilgrims of diverse races and tongues;
from the four corners of the earth,
join
in faith and worship,
at the feet of Your Divine Home--
the focal point of all muslims,
Al-Ka'bah!

As tears stream down their cheeks
they touch the holy Black-stone,
sensing--
connecting with its builders,
Ibraham and Ismaiil.

Millions form
white-washed human like waves,
orbitting the heart of Islam,
chanting their devotion,
crying their repentance,
to You, O God!

Labaiik Allahumah Labaiik.
Labaiika La Sharreka Laka, Labaiik.
Inna Al-Hamda, Wal Ni'mata Laka, Wal Mulk.
La Shareeka Lak.

Treading the path
to the Mount Of Mercy--
Arafat--
eyes shine with remorse,
pitiful hands stretch out in prayer--
hearts soar with hope of divine absolution--
as the hours fly by,
oblivious to the scorching sun...

Footsteps of weeping multitudes
amble in the wake of their ancestors in Islam,
caught up in a subliminal act--
a complete surrender--
under starlit skies
that lie witness
to the purifaction of repentant souls...

Millions of pebbles
gathered from the Sacred Land
cut through the air
aimed at the three pillars of evil...
feeding their hatred to Satan...

Blood gushes
from Sacrifices made to you, O God!
Accept their submission to Your Divine Will!

Ending their trip--
another orbit of Al-Ka'bah,
Your Mercy cleanses them,
they are reborn again--
chaste new infants!

La Ilaha Illa Allah
Mohammad Rasoul Allah!

Here I am, O God, at Thy Command! Here I am at Thy Command!
La Shareeka Laka:
Thou art without associate
Labaiik: Here I am at Thy Command!
Inna Alhamda, Wal Ni'mata Laka, Wal Mulk: Thine are praise and grace and dominion!
La Shareeka Lak:Thou art without associate.

La Ilaha Illa Allah: There is but one God
Mohammad Rasoul Allah: Mohammad is his prophet!

Hi Daniah,

What a very fascinating poem! I did not know of this tradition. Thank you for sharing it!

I love the image of these lines:
Footsteps of weeping multitudes
amble in the wake of their ancestors in Islam,
caught up in a subliminal act--
a complete surrender--
under starlit skies
that lie witness
to the purifaction of repentant souls...

Happy holidays! present.gif
