CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
The time has come for tinsel and lights
Hustle, hurry and holiday plights
Rushing through crowds at each store and mall
It’s: Get it today or not at all
Pushed and shoved out of a stranger’s way
For that last toy before the big day
Cellular phones ring above the noise
Santa listens to young girls and boys
Wishes and dreams whispered in his ear
Earnestly said with “Please, Santa Dear”
Exhaustion comes with no end in sight
No rest for it is Christmas Eve night
Wrap, wrap, wrap—then tie the perfect bow
No time to notice new fallen snow
A moment with eyelids closed in bed
Just enough for a visiting sled
Morning comes before the lightened sky
A stretch, a snuggle and then a sigh
Sneaky steps, the squeaking of a door
Interruption of Daddy’s loud snore
It’s a wild race for the Christmas tree
Cries of “Look what Santa brought to me”
Afternoon brings a special story
A tiny babe, a life of glory
As evening approaches, all is still
In this land of freedom and goodwill
