Christmas Angels

Somewhere out in the world today
A mother bows her head to pray
A son marches into enemy fire
Gunfire and bombs a deadly choir.

Under the overpass, shivering, lays,
An old man with bent head, prays.
A skinny black dog licks his hand
Too weak to stand he loves his man.

Betrayed by her family a girl runs away
Her father made it impossible to stay,
And as tears freely flow in pain and fear
She doesn’t see her angels gathering near.

Over in Iraq the soldier lives another day
What tomorrow brings, only God can say.
The old man is found, now barely alive
His dog died giving him the warmth to survive.

He is taken to a bright home and put to bed
Warm now, bathed and lovingly fed
He smiles softly and deeply sighs
Praising God for this wonderful surprise.

The young girl watches in terrible fright
As the town decorates with Christmas delight
Multi-hued fairy lights and fat snowmen
Poinsettias and stars made from painted tin.

A waitress serves her last cup of coffee
Grateful to be going home to trim her tree
She wished she had a family there
Her joy and blessings to freely share.

Bundled up she bounces into the night
Knocking into someone who squeals in fright
A young girl, really still a child
Looks up at her with eyes gone wild.

She asks softly, “Got a place to go?”
She smiles as the girl shakes her head no.
“You do now sweetie, come with me.”
She holds out her hand slowly, gently.

Christmas carols embrace the frosty night
City streets and warmly lit homes quite a sight
For some, Christmas is just another day
May God bless them and help them find the way.

Merry Christmas to all my friends.

Hi Pami;

There is Christmas cheer, Christmas joy and Christmas spirit. Your poem is filled with the spirit so few posses these days. I've read 'Christmas Angels' several times during the day today. I find the same comfort each time in knowing that there are still those, like you, that have and share this wonderful gift. Bless you.

Hi Sam,

There are so many hurting and needy people in our world. We pray and help as often as we can but it is especially at Christmas time, when our soldiers are away from their families, and when the homeless will stay near parking garages just to hug the warmth from incoming cars, or the children who have run away and are at the mercy of strangers...when we sing out joy, peace and goodwill and yet spend thousands of dollars on presents, decorations and huge amounts of food, I think of those unfortunate looking in, and am reminded of the sad story of The Little Match Girl, and it makes me cry. Things should be different...I think. Those of us who help as much as we can, can't help but wonder why there are so many...and why so many don't seem to care.

Love, God bless my friend, Pami

Thank you very much Lori. If this happens to win, the prize will be donated to The Bethlehem House here in Arkansas. It is a shelter that provides for many homeless families. I hope you have a warm and joyous Christmas.

God bless, Pami
