Take this parcel on your lap
and, while trimmings you unwrap,
this scene you may enact:
to migrants crushed in camps it seems
that our Christmas is a dream,
for so much hope has flown away
in decades or a day,
from homeless without solace
who yearn for warm embrace.

Is our feast thereby less real?
I think the joys that we may feel
are blessings from above,
bestowed with gentle love
on our redeemer’s natal date
which we chose to celebrate.

Others cower amidst the roar
and scourge of far-off wars,
so pray remember that this day
is our lauded lord's birthday;
gifts we hold within our hand
are like golden grains of sand,
all things grasped to merely save
are washed away by ether´s waves.

Better realize in our life
humane actions to halt strife
for frail souls trapped on roads
-so harsh, bereft of charms-
to firmaments or thresholds
illumined by one savior’s arms.

Faith informs the eternal One awaits
at an all-embracing golden gate.

The Lord replied, my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

"There is no life higher than the grasstops
Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind
Pours by like destiny, bending
Everything in one direction."

Sylvia Plath, Crossing the Water, Wuthering Heights.

Hi Sylvia,

What a beautiful and poignant message you have shared with us. I feel that same way as you that although there
are boundless problems in this world, that should not detract from our Christmas celebrations; just make us more
aware of how blessed we are to even be able to celebrate that season in relative peace.

We should never forget the reason for the season and His teachings about love and care for one's fellow man!

As Lori says, I feel all of us are winners because we cared enough to give our gifts of poetry to a seemingly uncaring world.

Larry

When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
