December

They’re decking out the downtown city streets
With wreaths and bows, bright lights and candy canes.
Electric stars and many twinkling treats
Are hung like icicles along the lanes.

There’s glitter from all lampposts and most stores,
From rooftops of the highest buildings, too.
The trees and bushes, houses, windows, doors
Are gaily lit in yellow, red, and blue.

The Christmas season – magic in the air!
In crowded malls, a happy shopping throng –
Excited parents, kids are everywhere,
And Christmas carols, folks all hum along.

The falling snowflakes dress our world in white,
This is the time when darkness turns to light.

December Skies

An early morning sun casts golden streaks
Across the pale grey clouds along its trail.
A ceiling hangs suspended from the peaks
Of mountains flanking both sides of our vale.

The snowline’s slowly creeping ever near,
Till suddenly the streets are covered white.
While cars go sliding, plows are out to clear
Off every route, they work straight through the night.

Beside the sidewalks, trees stand stark and bare,
Their leaves have fallen off some weeks ago.
Most birds are gone; a few take to the air
In search of feeders, flying to and fro.

December skies bring snow for kids to play,
To build a snowman, ride upon a sleigh.
