(for a fellow poet who passed recently)

My grieving in itself contains
lessons on your passing;
I don’t pretend to know answers,
only questions occupy me.
Holy gestures do not
signify an abiding end.

Trying to fathom the distance
you’ve gone, I’m sunk in depths
undiminished by tingling aphorisms
from aging poets’ breath and wisdom.

Forever kneels in silence
as you sing on the other side.

I confess that, self- absorbed,
carrying excess as a burden,
I missed some of those breakthroughs
when you offered words so alive
with singularity that anyone who heard
might have gasped and taken pause.

Welcome back. A strong poem. Very much in the confessional style which makes this poem work through its tone and connection. Reminds me of Robert Lowell.

Hi Richard,

I find this very powerful. I'm sorry you lost a good friend.

The last stanza sums it up. Poet, friend or family, one is always left with that feeling of not having listened, done or said enough.

We realize when it's too late. And feel guilty, or perhaps not.

No nits, Richard. It says it all.

Tx for sharing,

The Lord replied, my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

"There is no life higher than the grasstops
Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind
Pours by like destiny, bending
Everything in one direction."

Sylvia Plath, Crossing the Water, Wuthering Heights.

Hi Richard,

This is very moving and I'm sorry for your loss. A strong poem about grieving. We all seem to go through this stage of guilt that we didn't do enough. I can relate to this.

It's great to read your work again. Thanks for sharing.

Eira

Live one day at a time -it's simpler that way.
Laugh loud & often - it's medicinal.
Write from the heart - it's therapeutic.
Beauty comes from within - the outer is just skin!
