Our Christmas Is Not White Options

OUR CHRISTMAS IS NOT WHITE

Our Christmas is not white.
Our Christmas is green.
Flowers and fields a delight;
daily we need sun cream.

We don’t dress warm,
we swim, and perspire.
Cold food is the norm,
our grate has no fire.

We are visited by Santa -
his coat is still red.
Kids leave him some Fanta
mince pies - enough said….

We create his footprints
with sprinkles of flour -
it’s usually Dad’s stint
just before bewitching hour.

Think of us in Christmas cheer,
gifts, carols, hugs and heat -
Dad toasting with a beer,
and Santa resting in a pool seat!

By the way, our Christmases are seldom white these days - global warming, no doubt (since that explains everything now).

Anyway, enjoyed your poem - and I didn't know Santa was a Fanta fan - better watch his teeth with that much sugar!

Hi Bev,

It's very interesting to see Christmas from around the world.

Your poem took me back to my years in the Far East when we would pack up the turkey and trimmings and head off to spend Boxing Day on the beach.

We now also have to resort to flour footprints due to the lack of snow as James has mentioned. The children are still enchanted.

One question we had to answer when living in Singapore "How can Santa get in when we don't have a chimney?"

The Fanta is to illustrate the fact that he needs a cold, refreshing drink as opposed to a warm one! And to create some more 'colour' in the poem.

Yes, I know global warming is certainly presenting its heat.

Yes, the chimney thing is difficult: we left the door unlocked if there was no chimney in the house. Santa is very clever he knows exactly how to access a house when he has presents to deliver!

Hi Bev

I like the sound of your Christmas, lying in the sun enjoying the heat, swimming in the pool to cool off every now and again.  The only thing I'd miss is the roast turkey dinner, not really the meal to cook and eat when it is so hot.

As James and Grace have already mentioned we never get a white Christmas any more, usually dull grey skies or rain.  I don't remember the last time it snowed on Christmas day.

Well, we do have the hot trimmings, on Christmas Eve night or Christmas Day night. During the day it is cool food, watermelons and sunny skies.....even the evenings can be hot though.

My son is at university in Switzerland and we are planning a white Christmas there next year!

brill!  Mind you even in Switzerland you aren't guaranteed a white Christmas.  I've been in Zurich over the Christmas holidays and we didn't have snow.  You might have to head for the mountains.  Where will you be based?

In Leysin. The most beautiful little village...........He is in heaven, I think! The snow has not fallen there yet, it is a bit late. He will not be home for Christmas. He is staying and skiing. He will be home briefly in January before he starts his second year. All very exciting. I miss him terribly he has been there since the beginning of September.

mmm not sure if I would -  (trade places),  I need to see the sun everyday or I get unhappy. Here in Johannesburg we see the sun every day. Even if it is a bit overcast in the morning, the sun is shining by noon!

Very sweet!  I SO RELATE!  We do the same thing with the flour!  The last time I  made cookies, my 7 year old tasted a bit of flour that spilled and said "Hey!  Mommy!  This tastes like snow!!!"  I did my best to keep a straight face.  I think we'll go for the ash footprints this year!

    So sounds like the heat wave here in Texas. ~smile~ Even for here, it has been unseasonably warm. I would like to see snow once a year at least, but in truth, to see it here is very rare. If we do get it, it is usually only flurries, or a light dusting of an inch or so. Melts within a day or two...~sigh~
    I had never heard of the footprints in flour before, but apparently , judging from the replies, it is a fairly well-known concept. Interesting.
Sounds fun...bet the kids love it !

Had it not been for Irving Berlin, the western world might not think as highly of snow. I've always fantasized about a Christmas in a more torrid zone but family values control.
I can tell you that Christmas snow in Connecticut (New England) is greatly
aggrandized. I've lived here almost 50 years and have had about a dozen white Christmasses.

We have had snow here in Johannesburg on a 5 occassions in my lifetime. The one occassion was in Spring of 1981 - September the 11th! It had been chilly and that day in the am it was warm. I went to work in a silk dress with sandals! I worked in a highrise and at 11am I was chatting on the phone and I said to the person I was chatting to: There are particles falling from the roof of the building. I looked closer as they also collected on the window, and oh my gosh it was snow! This was a heavy down pour. The whole of Johannesburg turned to a kindergarden! It was a wonderful experience. Going home of course I was VERY cold. It lasted to the next day and then melted. I learnt not to be too hasty to wear summer clothing......the weather often has other ideas.

Thank you for reading an African Christmas...........you are welcome in SA anytime, it is a wonderful place. Johannesburg has the best weather in the world. If you read one of my replies above you will see we do also have snow at odd times. Our Drakensburg mountain range (large high range) has snow on top during our winters. We fly to the coast (in our plane) and fly next to the mountains look at the snow and as the crow flies we can also see the sea!
