The Passing of Blasphemous Bill *
It was mighty cold in the land of gold that winter of 95, and I’ll never know while there’s wind and snow how anything stayed alive. The ice worms froze from their heads to toes like icicles drowned in a still; then I got bad news: Bill had cached his dues, my buddy, old Blasphemous Bill.
I looked to the sky and asked myself why he couldn’t have waited till spring to up and die, maybe say goodbye, but thinking warn’t really his thing. Old Bill was dead, and I know I’d said I’d put him six feet in the ground, so I fixed his box and some chewing stocks on my sled for the long outward bound.
That night as I read before heading for bed in that shanty I called my home, I heard a strange noise, like a tune one enjoys at the Malamute back in Nome. I went outside, and stood stupefied, cuz there, in the northern lights passed a reindeer sleigh on its merry way! It’s Christmas again, what a sight!
