LETTER FROM NOWHERE
(Found by a comrade beside the body in a trench in Ypres 1915 The first line is a true extract from the letter.)
I have seen fifteen colours in your hair, in summer twenty shine to weave a rainbow wave. Here we have but three;
the gun-metal grey sky, the sea of khaki mud, the crimson tide of blood.
I cannot mention where I am; it matters not my love, without you by my side...
I am nowhere.
Without your constant presence in my mind and heart what sweet release 'twould be to let my soul to peace depar...
N.B This soldier actually survived to marry his love. Letters were exhibited posthumously by his son
