I’m stretched out on the carpet
like a fatigued feline.
I'm alive-
have just been
through an extended day
of unstoppable Christmas glee.

Checking the tree’s water level,
I’m feeling quite content to be
in this horizontal position
with prickly tree twigs poking me.
I’m finally able to stop being busy
momentarily.

While staring at white lights
through spindly green branches
of our decorated Fraser fir,
I’m mesmerized by what
I see, hear, and feel.

Colors celebrate and illuminate-
red, blue, green, gold, silver
mirror in bright white lights.
Christmas carols resonate
softly in this cozy room.

Such exquisite beauty
reflects a host of memories-

Baby’s First Christmas ornaments,
Kindergarten’s class-made decorations,
tiny ballerinas, nutcrackers, toy trains,
glass angels, ceramic kittens, homemade decorations,
bears, puppies, porcelain Peter Rabbit characters,
Santas, Rudolph, glittered angels, multicolored balls,
the miniature nativity scene, our treetop angel
holding her radiating candle.

I see you stretched out on the couch,
exhausted from a day of Christmas chaos-
shopping, shopping, shopping
with packages dropping.

For an instant,
through twinkling lights
and reflective colors,
I stare at your striking face.
You, too, are caught up in a moment
of December peace and quiet.

You look so dreamy
appearing like a child.
Your handsome face reflects love
that has been nurtured through our years.

As quick as a wink, we hear our youngest one
skipping from the kitchen to the den,
humming a Christmas tune along the way.
The sacred silence is broken.

“Mom! Dad! Look at our tree! It’s beautiful!”

If we could only bottle up this feeling and keep it-
to bump into this irreplaceable JOY
once every winter season truly
makes a wonderful time of the year.
