This is the first time I've entered Odin's Opposition. The rules stated something about an email address but I did not see others posted so did not include it here. Please correct me if I have this wrong. I was also unclear whether we could or should post comments to each other's entries here.

The Mistress Learns

~*~*~*~

The Mistress is a strange being
born not by choice
but by circumstance,
bound to her title
by emotions
she can not deny.

She forever lives
in a quiet misery
waiting for those
few precious moments
that make her
feel alive.

The Mistress
must learn
many things
to
survive.
She learns that…

She will never be #1 in her lover’s eyes
and must find a level
of contentment
or lose that which she deems so valuable.

She will be looked down upon
by all others
regardless of the circumstance
or of how deep her feelings run.

Secrecy dictates her world,
forcing her to keep
her undeniable love silent,
always guarding her words to others.

She watches her lover take
every precaution
to protect his own image
over the possibility of exposure.

She learns that she must pay the price
of extreme loneliness
and accept with patience
those cherished moments given her.

She must remain silent
on that which gives her anguish
or risk retribution
and the threat of being abandoned.

She must pretend ignorance
and turn a blind eye
when that which is obvious
slaps her in the face.

She must wrestle
within herself daily,
that of right from wrong
and the lies she tells herself.

The Mistress
has the choice
to walk away or stay
and accept the consequences.

She must understand
that remaining means
loneliness, pain, frustration,
degradation, and unfulfilled dreams.

She knows that she is living a fantasy
made of dreams that will never be fulfilled,
lost in her longing,
a prisoner of her own needs.

If with all she has learned
she still believes he is worth it…
May God watch over her,
for no one else will.

Hi Jackie,

We have restricted 'replies' in this forum since it's a competition forum. However, once the competition ends and I move the poems into Odin's Archive forum, comments are welcome there. cheer.gif

I will edit that part of the rules out - it was required when we allowed 'guests' to post, but now that this is a members only site, I know the email addys. grinning.gif

Cheers
Lori
