Seeing the Light

Mild gynecomastia; caused by medication?
cancerous?

I rub the nub; is that supposed to happen—
in males? Soreness, aching ‘round the nipple

well, let’s find out today,
but shall I die of old age before hospital
admission process ends?

finally, on the gurney;
nurse asks:
any removable dentures? contacts?
rings?

nope; I cut off the tight wedding band
just for you
nurse forces smile

anesthesiologist: hi, i’m dr. brdsnuloharin…
my unimpressed reply: hello there, sandman

why are we here?

havin’ my breast reduced

wife rolls eyes:
no! removal of a possible malignant breast tumor

east-indian surgeon arrives—an hour late
great sense of humor
“I’m heeeeeere!”

I make her wait
won’t be denied—

suddenly
can’t spot urinal
but manage spotting sheets

clattering wheels on worn floor
oh-ooh
loony song runs through mind
“they’re coming to take me away”

from gurney to operating table—
handled like cadaver
never been heave-hoed so much

masks, horn-rimmed glasses
bright lamp overhead
hear poltergeist dwarf “Tangina” cry
“don’t go into the light!”

wonder where my soul will be in a minute—
probably sitting on the surgeons shoulder

I’m shirtless, bareback—
watching, drifting over to coffee shop
nurses’ station, enjoying my time out of body—
drifting heavenward—hey, not yet!

awake
attractive nurse leans over me

still disconnected
fail to get excited about
her pendant—
cleavage—
eventually ponder pointlessness
of breasts on males—
off-limits beauties nuns
nurses

nearly back to normal
have tempting visions of southern-fried
chicken breasts to end my fast.

prognosis: I’ll live.

Hi Peggy,
yeah, hospitals are inner circles of hell, but you sure appreciate those facilities when you really need them; and how I know that-- I don't mind telling you and the whole wide world; I came down with Parkinson's 3 years ago and opted for Deep Brain Stimulation implant surgery. Bad move; while it arrested the tremors, it left me with permanent vertigo....
I do hope you are feeling well? Peggy, thanks for reading and commenting; glad you liked my silliness.

Hi, good poetry friend,
having survived wars, back-injury and the above-described ordeal, at my age--only natural causes or the Black Death can do me in, lol. Thanks for checking back. Appreciated.

Jerry

Hi Snow,
well, that's nice of you to say so; although, at times it's gallows humor that takes hold, at least to some degree. Glad you're able to smile. magicwink1.png Snow, take care. Thanks,
Jerry
