Splat!
(Through a Mother's Eyes)
My fingers dip and dash in porage and cherry jam with my usual panache this morning.
Splat!
Absorbed in my creation I fail yet again to notice the look of sad frustration on your face.
Splat!
I clap sticky hands to head struck by my genius. Of course! A touch of red to brighten your cheeks!
Splat!
Help me throw off my chains. I love you, but imprisoned by my high chair reins I cannot reach you.
Splat!
My grasp of etiquette can’t reach your exacting standards. Well, not quite yet! Please may I leave the table?
Splat!

Dear Grace, Sounds like me 71 years ago. This may be the very first poem where porage is compared to play doh! It's spelled porridge over here. Cheers, Ron jgd

Hi Ron,
QUOTE Dear Grace, Sounds like me 71 years ago. This may be the very first poem where porage is compared to play doh! It's spelled porridge over here.
And all of us Ron.
Not a spelling mistake Ron. These are Scotts Porage Oats (scottish spelling).
Porage I always found from my experience of 4 sons was always a good substitute for play doh, except if a glob lay undiscovered for a while. When found, it was more like concrete

Hi Fran, :cheer:
QUOTE I love the pictures this conjures! I have photos of my own little darlings learning to eat and covered in mashed carrots, banana or bolognaise - anything gooey.
Only suggestion - should it be "porridge" ?
Ah! Happy days eh Fran? The more they put in the more came out! When I look at pictures of other people's little angels so adorned, I smile indulgently and think "How charming!" With my own it was an entirely different matter. :medusa:
Please note reply to Ron Fran, these are Scotts Porage Oats. Glad it brought back happy memories.

Dear All, I suspected porage was the proper spelling! Yes I did!! I'm always interested in how our "common" language differs. I suppose porage/porridge doesn't! Cheers, Ron jgd

Hi Grace
Oh what fun squidging hands in food, splattering it everywhere. The worst is the mess banana makes on clothes. If it isn't cleaned up quickly it turns black and is impossible to remove.
My only problem was with the language. I had trouble imagining a 2 year old sitting in the high chair, I kept seeing an adult acting as a baby.
I clap sticky hands to head struck by my genius. Of course! a touch or red ....should it be of red? to brighten your cheeks!

Hi Nina,
QUOTE Oh what fun squidging hands in food, splattering it everywhere. The worst is the mess banana makes on clothes. If it isn't cleaned up quickly it turns black and is impossible to remove.
Not to mention the smell!!
QUOTE My only problem was with the language. I had trouble imagining a 2 year old sitting in the high chair, I kept seeing an adult acting as a baby.
I probably should have made that plainer Nina, these are supposed to be the mother's interpetation of what is going on inside her little darling's head. Perhaps I can fix that with a subtitle?
QUOTE I clap sticky hands to head struck by my genius. Of course! a touch or red ....should it be of red? to brighten your cheeks!
Quite right Humperdinck. Off to fix it now. :snail:

Grace, Oh, the little darlings ! ~laughing~ Every meal is more about fun and discovery than about hunger..... This was a joy to read as memory stirs of my sons now grown, but once so small. Can sympathize with the mother here who is frustrated with the mess. However, in future these will be memories cherished and treasured. I like how we see this event through the insightful interpretation of the mother. Very nicely done ! Marcia

Yes, Marcia, I am sure every mother can relate to toddlers' mealtimes. What joy they bring........ in retrospect!
I used to sit like this and ponder what was going on inside that little head. All those scrambled pictures; like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that must be whirling around behind those angelic features I am pleased it brought a smile and a memory!

Hi Cathy,
QUOTE This was cute! I had to chuckle while I was reading. It does bring back the memories doesn't it? But it doens't apply to all little ones. Blaise can't stand to have anything on her hands and face. I remember her 1st birthday...you always want to get that cute little picture with the cake smeared all over face and hands. Well not in her case! We had to smear the cake for her in order to get the picture and then clean her up right after! lol Go figure!
Are you sure that Blaise is a child and not an angel Cathy. :detective:
Fancy doing that to a defenceless child!! (Well, if she wouldn't co-operate, all's fair in love and photography. )

[b]Hello Grace! :tropicalfish:
What a wonderful poem! The repeated use of Splat really adds to the drama in this one. :bookworm:
I wouldn't change anything except for a few notes below by the PP, :cop: .
Cheers! ~Cleo :smurf:
