Hi Marcia

A lovely reminder of how children make Christmas special.  Their enthusiasm and excitement is contagious.

Good luck in the competition.

Nina

Scrubbed little cherubic faces
wearing homemade costumes;
taking their places
on a simply decorated
nativity stage.

Solemn, frightened faces
struggling to remember lines
and simple stage direction;
often requiring a gentle nudge
or line prompt.

Faces flushed with fear,
and mild embarrassment
when performance falters;
too young to know
that we laugh with delight...
never, disappointment.

Seeing the birth of Jesus
through these innocent portrayals
is a precious memory.
Hearing familiar Christmas carols
sung, off-key, with obvious joy...
a spiritual blessing.

No music seems as sweet,
no gift as valuable.
Perhaps it is the absolute faith
that only a child knows...
that teaches us grown-ups
the true meaning of Christmas.

Hi Marcia,

I loved so many lines... 'cherubic faces' ~ Is some amazing title for a poem in my mind! LOL What I most loved about this poem was the centering of the childhood values that as adults, we tend to busy ourselves with the hustle and bustle of the holidays, as with everyday all year long and deny ourselves the gifts of knowing the true meaning of the smallest yet most profound things that surround us everyday. This captures that-for me. It brought back memories of School plays and the excitement both watching my child sing her Christmas parts, and remembering my own school-moments and how the poem truly catches a certain essence that is apart of that excitement. It wasn't the stage or the audience, but rather the being apart of something so profound -- even if only for a moment of pretending.

This is a wonderful and joyful poem with a deep and reconizable message.

Good luck in the contest, and best wishes and hugs, Liz

Thank-you, Liz. I am happy that you were touched by the poem in so many ways. My thoughts will always be simple and down to earth, I am afraid.....but, we are, what we are. Children represent a huge part of what Christmas is all about. They can have absolute trust and belief without seeing....a simple faith that we often lose as we become jaded adults. And the joy in the simplest things....
