Moderator Choice Award

A POET'S VOICE

I cannot stop the wind from blowing
Nor still the ocean tides;
A rose will bloom without my knowing
To adorn an Autumn bride;
Yet I can stretch a loving hand
To embrace a frightened child,
By greed its rights denied.

I cannot halt empires from growing
Nor make the rich provide;
A war will rage without foreknowing
To scourge fair countryside;
Yet I can join the crescent throng
Refusing to abide
While innocents have died.

Let this be writ upon my tomb:
That I did not my eyes blindfold
Nor close my heart to doom,
But rather with a poet's voice
these shameful deeds retold.

Note: I wrote this poem a few months ago, in a sort of challenge with my  friend David-Tao. We both liked Emily Dickinson's poem Life, iv,  so we attempted to follow her rhyming pattern. I hasten to add that I have not done a strict syllable count, the idea was to copy the end rhyme of the lines and achieve a similar balance. Length was optional and I added a 5L last stanza for good measure... good learning practice, I hope...
I am not obsessive about mathematical precision...   .... but will appreciate all crits very much indeed.

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

Isn't it a lovely poem?

Stream Is Here !

Lee, Poppy and I stumbled down the green field laughing, calling out to each other. The sun shone, the wind blew and the fields smiled; Wild flowers and small edible  fruits were everywhere, some sensitive grass curled up their leaves as we passed. A few yellow butterflies and dragonflies danced about .

The mile was just a few leaps away for us country kids. Soon we were at the back of Len's house.

We gasped as we saw the crystal-clear water, sparkling and rippling over rocks, kitchen steps and hardened soil. A few dead  leaves floated on top.

"The stream is here at the back of Len's kitchen!" someone yelled.

Yes, it flowed there last night when the stream swelled after a heavy rain. Soon it would become small and return to its place near by below.

" Let's celebrate today! Let's swim in it with our clothes on. The sun will dry them on our way back. Later Len's mama will warm our bellies with hot buns and milk, like she said. " exclaimed Lee all in one breath.

Soon we were wading and splashing in the stream like ducks. We sailed our paper boats in it too. There was a competition to see which boat would win. The loser would do the dishes.

Never were there kids so merry in the entire village that day! Never had we had so much to talk about and so much to eat! It's not everyday you have a stream at the back of a kitchen!

At noon, tired children went home; each one  held  a packet  of  take away.

Thanks so much for this award. I feel very honoured to share it with Agatha.
Her piece is splendid.

I believe I already expressed my thanks elsewhere, just wandered in here tonight and find that I missed a turning at some point.
