(An Impromptu Campfire Cowboy Song)
There is an Arizona town that’s known for its O.K. Corral and Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday; they ran the whole danged town and all
Now, “Tombstone” is a tourist trap where pistoleros fire blanks and reenact the deeds of guys who used to hold up Fargo banks--
and that includes Doc Holliday, the closest pal of Wyatt Earp who was not what the movies made him out to be; he was a twerp
Ah think of him and his best pal, the Doc, as the ones that got away, and want to hold them to account— some other time, but not today
It was Doc’s mare that was unique ‘coz she could act and talk, recite a Shakespeare line to boot, write sonnets at a jog or walk
One day she was—what one might call-- in season. Champing at the bit, she cast her roving eye about, getting ready, lickety split
He had held up a stage, that Doc, and rode her into Tombstone town, then tied her to the hitching post; dog-tired, he wanted to lie down
One idling, no good card shark lit his black cheroot and said: “Say, Doc, got time for Faro or some Stud?" Said Doc: “Yep; tonight at 8 ‘o clock?”
The old mare’s ears perked up; she said: “Hey, never mind Doc Holliday; just tell that dawgon lonesome stud that Ah’m not tired and I will play.
(okay, okay! this needs work; ought to have let the horse rhyme this poem, eh?)

Hi Jerry!
I know that you're not planning to be around MM, due to the lack of activity, but all the same I'm going to say that you've made me grin a lot while reading this poem, tx!
Good for the spirit, to have a good laugh. And it does seem a shame that so many days have gone by without comments. A shame...
And no, I don't think that a mare in season would write this piece better than you!! She'd hit all the wrong keys while sidling up to the dawgon lonesome stud.
So sorry that nobody has commented here. Dear Lori said she was back to MM for good, here to stay, so perhaps she'll turn up, we miss her! And I miss Eira, must send her a message so as to know whether all is well with her. We all have personal problems, but poetry is always a balm if one can step in to its sphere for an hour...or more.
Best of luck, friend Jerry! Syl***

Good morning, Syl; glad you got a belt out of my humorous write. I think humor is poetry's stepchild that most poets shy away from, but it's all in the eyes of the beholder, and as long as one reader chuckles about my nonsense, I suppose it isn't a wasted effort. Is this site in a sleep mode? I don't know, but this Prince Charming will, probably, stand by with the occasional wake-up kiss. Meantime, thank you for being such a good friend on this forum. Wishing you all the best, Jerry

QUOTE (Keith Logan @ Aug 5 14, 00:41 ) Hi Jerry,
I enjoyed your cowboy humour. Story telling is an art which I must admit to not being good at.
Thanks again.. Keith the happy chappy Hi Keith; glad you commented. Oh, sure you are good at this; you just need a memorable incident to trigger a funny verse or two. Hey, so pleased this made you a happy chappy, lol. Take care, Jerry

Good fun - I'm still giggling about the mare - they can be flirty creatures when the 'mood' takes them. I agree that Wyatt Earp was a twerp - perhaps cowboy humour comes about from too much time spent home on the range

I guess I'll need to scan some hard copies to retrieve my cowboy stuff. About that mare--my favorite horse, Pepper: she had all those human attributes that I spoke of. And as far as those Western movie heroes are concerned, well they are based on dime fiction--except one can no longer get that trash for less than 9 bucks or umpteen nickers (do you use that monetary term down yonder?). Okay, Maureen; thanks for reading and giggling. Jerry
