You are quite correct in most dictionaries, my friend.
And "earing" is "small ring or grommet of rope or metal fastened to the edge of a sail" whereas "earring" is the item dangling from your ear. EARINGS Earings are relatively invisible nautically, going silent. VISIBLE ······· ·······Slow down; things will go faster!
