HOLIDAY BILLS

Black Friday comes
but once a year.
It's the one day
merchant's cheer;
husbands and fathers
loathe and fear.

Red shopping bags
overflowing with gifts;
each one handpicked
to give a jovial lift.
The cost of giving
is void of thrift.

Holiday presents
we love to receive,
wrapped creatively
in efforts to deceive,
caring contents inside
we're eager to retrieve.

Soon it's January,
the bills arrive,
financial angst rises,
we don't feel so alive.
Credit cards are maxed,
how will we survive?

John,
~Laughing~ You are certainly not alone......some people charge so much they are paying for gifts months after the holidays.I try not to get that carried away, but it sure isn't easy sometimes. Nothing is quite so funny as the awful truth ! Enjoyed the humor and wit in this. Thanks for sharing. Best of luck in the competition !

"...We are born into the world like a blank canvas
and every person that crosses our path takes up the brush and makes their mark upon our surface.
So it is that we develop.
But we must realize there comes a day that we must take up the brush and finish the work. For only we can determine if we are to be just another painting or a masterpiece..."

Boy, this is so true John.

Some folks (sadly) have 'lost' the true meaning of gift giving. Each year, they try to out-do the last (and each other), spend more, but do not really understand the meaning - it's a facade. If someone gave me a hand-knitted hat (they made themselves) and another gave me a hi-tech, gortex ski cap - I'd give the knitted hat more wear. It's because I knew the 'effort' and 'love' that went into making it and the checking account balance would fare so much better.

The bills metaphor reminds me of those who have caviar wishes, but budweiser paychecks too, LOL! They'll be paying long after Valentines day has come and gone.

Part of it though is the fact that everything just plain costs so much more today, one NEEDS to use credit cards - even the turkey is no longer a cheap item....

In all seriousness, merchants LOVE December - at my work, it's prety much a make or break time for the entire fiscal year. I enjoyed your poem.

Best of luck! shepherd.gif

Marcia,
Believe it or not....I started off with the words Black Friday and ten minutes later I was done. This one just flowed and I just left it as it is. It's not perfect, but I think there is a tinge of humor in it.
Thanks for stopping by.

Lori,
The holidays have gotten away from us and they have lost much of their value. I tried to point out the vicious cycle we all get caugh up in by trying to buy the biggest, the best, etc and forgetting that sooner or later we have to pay the price for it.
I agree with much of what you said about the commercialism of the holidays.

The one drawback to the holidays - commercialism! Ugh!

And yet... there is still a difference. Even while out shopping most people's attitudes are different during the Christmas season. Friendlier, happier, wishing others 'Merry Christmas' when normally they wouldn't speak to strangers... that type of thing. Of course, come next season they may still be paying for the year before! LOL

Good luck with the competition John!

Cathy

Cathy,
Thank you. As one mature's , you tend to go back to the true meaning of Christmas. I know with my family we have become more practical and try to cherish the moments of having family together.

AHahaaa... Hey John,

A great and unique poem about that day they've stuck in our holidays to bring distance in families... It's funny... at my work, we get off Thanksgiving day and the day after thanksgiving (Black Friday) I've never even gone out to buy milk on the day after THanksgiving.

The distance, comes from all the overtime we have to put in to catch up on those maxed out cards! wink.gif

Great poem!

Hugs, Liz

Liz,
Thanks. I try to avoid Black Friday...figure if I stay home, I have less chance of maxing out my plastic cards.
