Extra Parts
Each Christmas Morning under the tree were dolls, cool cars and all sorts of things. My brother and I had raced out to see what Santa had left by the lighted strings. The presents all dressed in ribbons and bows, a baby doll carriage, a bike, and train lego's, an etch a sketch, a truck that tows... so many toys, we almost went insane! Excitedly; in pajamas and all, Tommy and I had rushed outside to play. I grabbed my carriage, and big bouncy ball, he jumped atop his bike, pulling his sleigh. Two cheerful children with nothing to fret, strolling along; till my two front wheels had roll; one to the right, one to the left as each one wobbled loosened from the reel. All of a sudden, Tommy's tires took leave. We stood, confused, with nothing more to say. Dragging the pieces that came Christmas eve; what slop did old Santa leave us this day. When mother had seen our gifts were all broke, she looked at poor Dad, a tisk, a nod "how sad!" gave him a wink, as if it were a joke You know, she said, you needn't be so mad... While Santa was assembling this and that, he found some things he put inside his hat... Hahahahaha Liz!
 That was funny. I enjoyed this poem for two reasons (among others): 1. It reminded me of traditional times when we were kids hurrying awake to open our eyes and see what Santa had brought us and 2. The comedic element - perfect title "spare parts". I seem to recall a few screws loose in my day too.  Well done - happy Ho Ho Ho! ~Cleo

Ah, that Santa sure has a hard time understanding complicated construction manuals......strangely, just like us humans. ~grin~

One year, my brother and I woke up and under the tree from Santa Clause was his brand new bike and for me, a full sized coach doll carriage. There I was walking down a path from our building to the building behind us where my aunt lived, and my brother just up ahead on his bike. Out of the blue, the front wheels of my carriage wobbled off going in one direction, the other off in another direction and my brothers front wheel of his bike came off, skidding him to the ground. My mother, (after checking to see if Tommy was ok) started to laugh, while I stodd there holding my carriage handle hysterically crying, and said to my father... "See I told Santa those nuts and bolts weren't extra's!" ... I like your suggestion for a title... 'Spare parts" I had thought on that one, but went with extra cause that was what my mother had said, actually after we got older and my mother told me the story of that Christmas eve, my father sitting there, looking at this and that and saying... nah, these are just extras'! Glad you enjoyed this. I enjoyed the walk down memory lane! Liz,
This bears warm reflections of when my sister and I would wake up on Christmas morning. I could tell by the gifts you have referenced: etch-a-sketch, legos, etc that you are much younger than I. If I had written this poem, I would have interjected such toys as: Lincoln logs, erector set, Betsy Wetsy Doll.....etc. This was a warm trip down memory lane. Hey John,
I am sorry I didn't see your reply here. Gosh, I am sorry... AH, but the list of toys you've left we had everyone! Actually the erector set was my favorite... I was a Tom Boy for the very beginning... Loved sports and lincoln logs (I think I still have some in a box of my old things...) and yes, I had a betsy wetsy! I did however like Baby Alive (the original) not the one they have today... She had a soft cloth body and when you pulled her string in the back she would move her rubbery arms and legs slowly like a new born baby. She didn't eat or anything, just moved as if she was real.
