FRUITS

As autumn comes we pay our dues,
thanksgiving for a rash of fruits;
not all are of the eating kind -
varied shape pine cones come to mind.

Huge glossed chestnuts in spiky garb
for horses who won’t need bicarb;
while we enjoy edible kind -
roasted, hot, very refined.

We wander through the fallen leaves
crunched and curled, cast-off poet’s sheaves ?
There’s hidden treasure in there too
dear doggy’s fruits, all over shoe ....

Alan,
At first I thought this was going to be one of a multitude of our hymns to Autumn but as I read on it gave me something to smile about.
In each line you captured the true essence of the season. Some things are treats for mankind and others are delicacies for nature's other creatures.
How many times have poets written about falling leaves? At least you gave some hint of that when you stated...cast-off poet’s sheaves .

My only quirk is that I would like a few more lines of your witty observations of a season that has been the focus of every writer and poet for hundreds of years.

Alan, Yep you got to watch out walking through those autumn leaves, or as Frank Zappa said 'don't you eat that yellow snow, you don't know where them huskies go.' Doggy fruits eh? Hmm somehow I just can't picture fecal matter as a fruit, but I do enjoy your boundless sense of humor.

Dear Steve,

fruit:
* noun: the consequence of some effort or action
* noun: the ripened reproductive body of a seed plant
* noun: an amount of a product

Thanks for the comments, but I think you will have to allow, per the defs 1 & 3 here !

Love
Alan

I liked your view of autumn. Good references to horses and dogs, haha. It is a wonderful season. Interesting use of "roasted, hot, very refined." That's a good way of describing man's edible chestnuts.
