The night was dark, in pale twilight lit,
although the moon was full, all but a small bit
was obscured by cloud, and one would strive
to see their way, but then the night came alive
with the sound of horses, and the tramp of feet
as men in measured pace, came down the street!
Some folks were quick to grasp what was taking place,
whilst others confused, watched with ashen face
most of the more timid inhabitants were seen
to cringe behind drapes drawn tight. A scene
that caused some to cry out - terror struck!
Knowing the foreign invaders, would run amuck,
as they terrorised with sword and fearsome cries!
Their arrival, was unseen under the violet skies
of stormy clouds, whilst the loud hum of wind
rising to a shriek, as they had earlier determined,
had muffled the noise of the Legion that came
to subjugate. and wider spread Rome’s fame!

horses, tramp pace, grasp, cringe, violet, hum.

Hello Denis!

This poem is fun, I like it. To read, of course, but not to experience the Roman Legions invade my country.
Rome didn't expand to S.A., of course, but the Spanish Conqueror was probably far worse, IMHO. Imposing the Catholic religion on indigenous peoples (whom they called savages), was done in a blood-curdling fashion. The genocide was probably one of the worst in all of history.
One has to read Bartolomé de las Casas logbook to truly understand what went on.

I haven't found The Invading Legion yet, but will do. Not much time. I'm so glad Eira has returned! We've missed her a lot.

The Lord replied, my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

"There is no life higher than the grasstops
Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind
Pours by like destiny, bending
Everything in one direction."

Sylvia Plath, Crossing the Water, Wuthering Heights.
