you
mistake
the meaning
of the passage
sir

Simply stated, "Eye for an eye" equals our "the punishment shall fit the crime," or, in this case, "the punishment shall not exceed the crime" ~ If you read on after the "wake up" statement, "eye for an eye", the examples of justice that follow make it clear that no one is going to get the other person's eye. As a matter of fact, the very first example has a master who'd beaten his slave such that he lost his eye; the judgement is NOT that the master loses his eye, but that the servant is set free. The constant quoting of "eye for an eye" today as though it is a gory and senseless edict are simply guilty of not reading on to SEE what the meaning is -- with both of their own eyes!

Exodus 21: 22 If two men are fighting and they strike a pregnant woman and her children are born prematurely, but there is no harm, he is certainly to be fined as the husband of the woman demands of him, and he will pay as the court decides. 23 If there is harm, then you are to require life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, and bruise for bruise. 26 If a man strikes the eye of his male or female servant and destroys it, he is to release him as a free man in exchange for his eye. 27 If he knocks out the tooth of his male or female servant, he is to release him as a free man in exchange for his tooth.

Hi Daniel,
Seems to be too early in the morning for you. I was not referring to "an eye for an eye". This is about the verse in the New Testament - Matthew 5:29 - And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body ...

This act would be much easier to accomplish with a stick than with the fingers.

But of course Jesus was putting aside ridiculous excuses for "stumbling" since it's not the eye or hand or foot that causes one to do wrong things. But if one IS, then, well, pluck it off! (That oughta shut some mouths!) Of course most people go on with their excuses anyhow. Right?
