Thanks so much for the explanation, Alan. No wonder I didn't understand. It seems that no one really knows the origin of the expression!
If I wrote in Brit slang à la mode all my readers may think they were snowed by things they know not; they wouldn't grasp what they read; they'd need me to decode. ······· ·······Slow down; things will go faster!
