you see it takes your breath away
because they expect you
to only blow

to succeed, without alibi,
in everything that was academic;
noting the confetti
gleaned from scenario
of his milieu

As you well know, Joyce's fiction centered on Dublin, and his characters resembled family, friends and enemies from his time spent there. Ulysses and The Dubliners, in particular, are set in the streets and alleyways of that city.
