Waiting to Take Off

Waiting at the intersection
to the main runway,
I sat in the backseat
with my young daughter
and my sister.

Up front was my father
and my sister's fiancee.

"Control, this is Cessna one seventy November two three.
Permission to back away from thirity two, over."

"Granted, Cessna one seventy. Over."
came the reply.

"Daddy, why'd you do that,"
I asked.

"I have a lot of valuable cargo
on board this airplane,"
he answered.

"I don't understand,"
I replied.

"Well, much of my family's in here,
and those jets doing touch and go's
in the cross wind might hit us.
There's no need to take a chance."

That was over 37 years ago,
but I'll never forget Dad's words.

"There's no need to take a chance"
is the mantra I've heard
through the years
when I'm in the driver's seat
with loved ones in the car.

Thanks, Dad!

Peggy
