O’ women, my women, our work has just begun
the ship’s are in today, the men we sought are won
the port is near, the bells I hear, the crews all exulting
while follow eyes the steady gaze, the men all grin and daring

But o’ heart! heart!
that many things are said
where, in the bedroom my sailor lies
drunk,  out cold…… on the bed

O’ women, my women, rise up and hear the sound of cash
rise up, for you the money is flung – for you, the music trills
for you the bouquets and kisses – for you the shore-a-crowding
for you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning
here sailor, dear sailor
this arm beneath your head
is it some dream.. that you have been led
you’re drunk and out cold..... on the bed

my sailor does not answer, his lips are pale and still
my seaman does not feel my arm, he’s drunk and has no will
the ships are anchored safe and sound, the voyage over and done
from a long trip, the seafarers’ come in… with object won
but I, with sorrowful tread
pace the room my sailor lies
drunk...out cold, and on the bed.
