Tool Tips

A hammer is a useful tool when used
to hammer nails. But if you have a screw
that’s loose, don’t choose a hammer. When abused,
most screws just quit; lost grip is one good clue;
they tend to spin in place when stripped of threads.
To drive a screw, you need the right screwdriver.
(Never hammer screws atop their heads.)
Fit driver into slot-- now, give it five or
six full twists-- till tight enough-- That’s it.
Assign the proper tool in every case
and thus complete the task before you quit–-
with nails and screws and tools, each in its place.

Now once again, so nothing’s misconstrued,
A hammer hammers nails; a screw gets screwed.

Sue

Sue...

I'm not to sure of how I ought to say that this comes out is many different ways, but then I know that you intended it, so all I'll do is chuckle where I sit.

Hi Sue

I enjoyed this. Very witty. Of course slot screws are much better than crossheads. Oops, beginning to sound like a DIYer which I most definately am not.

Cheers

Hi Sue,

lol  Possible double meaning??

A few suggestions to limit the use of 'hammer'.

A hammer is a useful tool when used
to {hammer}[pound in] nails. But if you have a screw
that’s loose, don’t choose a hammer. When abused,
most screws {just}[will] quit; lost grip is one good clue;
they tend to spin in place when stripped of threads.
To drive a screw, you need the right screwdriver.
(Never {hammer}[beat on] screws atop their heads.)
Fit driver into slot-- now, give it five or
six full twists-- till tight enough-- That’s it.
Assign the proper tool in every case
and thus complete the task before you quit–- 'quit' used elsewhere
with nails and screws and tools, each in its place[.]

Now once again, so nothing’s misconstrued,
A hammer hammers nails; a screw gets screwed[.]

Cute poem no matter where your mind takes you!  lol

Hi Sue

There are definitely a few hammers trying to hammer screws where I work and the screws sure are going to get screwed if they don't quit first..

Very clever use of metaphor.

Very cute, Sue.
In my trade, electrical, I carry a toolbelt full of different screwdrivers.  Being a dinosaur, I can remember when we had Robertson screws that always stayed on your screwdriver until set - a wonderful thing.  Nowadays, we are a global society and most things are made in China; the Philips (cross) screws predominate and we curse.  Never do they stay on the tip of the screwdriver when they're supposed to.

Hammers have their place!  Just watch out for fingernails.

Good to see you back from Florida.

Best

Merlin

You sound like a shop teacher, except missing curses to hammer the screws home.

My teacher was not poetic and probably would not have appreciated your sonnet for explaining what is for what.  Our daughter took 4H and they used hammers for nails screws and anything else that could be beat upon. I kept my tools away from her husband who took the same classes and became an auto mechanic.

I enjoyed your sonnet very much.

Hi Sue  :upside:

and all the world's a metaphor... but metaphor or nor metaphor this one is sound as a pound. WOnderful play on words, your count and your rhyme-scheme, esp 'driver' and 'five or' - inspired, lol. And then there are your reps working their little socks off and making me smile broadly. Muchly enjoyed!

Wow Sue,

I haven't stopped smiling and laughing since I finished the Sonnet. A treasure all in all. I absolutely adore the underlying meaning as well as the primary message, both hold unique and original angle. The volta is wonderful. It's soft, uninterruptive, it blends into the turn from the compareson as L9 begins use and procedures... the rhymes you've created are remarkable.
driver/five or ... screw/clue, that's it/quit.

The inner sounds make this a joy to read aloud. I liked Cathy's suggestion for L2, the repeat of hammer, here does feel awkward and can be improved,
pound in' is an interesting sub. I also love the word 'wallop, trounce or pounce on' ...

Other than that... I think every word holds its own and adds a little more to the delight. There isn't a word that doesn't bring this to life.

Happy New Years and may this year bring joy and goodness to us all...

Hugs, Liz

I SEE,
Imagine, the use of a hammer explained in sonnet form, and with your typical mastery of the form. That alone is enough for me to say!

circumsolar, John, Liz, Ron and Lori...
I really appreciate all your thoughtful comments and suggestions and I'm delighted that you enjoyed this silly sonnet.
John and Liz mentioned that there may be at least one too many "hammers" included. Repeating words is something I usually watch out for myself, but in this case I intentionally used 'hammer' the noun and 'hammer' the verb to add to the lite feel.
I'll think on possible subs.
Thanks for the heads-up on the punctuation, Lori.
I will attend to it.  :pharoah2
Best to you all.
Sue
