Mosaic Musings...interactive poetry reviews _ Poetry Education -> Karnak Crossing _ Cinquain

Posted by: Cleo_Serapis Aug 3 03, 10:06

CINQUAIN:  From the French, meaning "a grouping of five."

The Cinquain has five lines of two, four, six, eight, and two syllables, respectively, with a total syllabic count of 22.

The cinquain should have no more than two full sentences.

The Handbook of Poetic Forms suggests:  Do not add words to fill out this form; write with feeling, but do not allow your writing to become cloyingly sweet; build toward a climax and put a surprise into your last two lines.  Rather than parts of speech, be concerned with thoughts and images.

The cinquain came to popularity by Adelaide Crapsy, who devised the form back in the early 1900's. She was so influenced by the Japanese forms, tanka and haiku, that she developed her own poetic system which she then called cinquain.

The most famous of the few Crapsy cinquains from her The Complete Poems is:

TRIAD

These be
Three silent things:
The falling snow... the hour
Before the dawn... the mouth of one
Just dead.

Cinquains, though they have never become very popular, have always attracted a number of poets who are still developing the form.

Why not try your own here in this thread! Come on! We dare you!  cool.gif  :p

WELCOME TO THE CINQUAIN CHALLENGE, WHERE YOU CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO USE YOUR WORDS WISELY...

A CINQUAIN IS ONE OF THE POETIC FORMS THAT USES SET RULES.

THE RULES ARE:
5 LINES WITH A SET SYLLABLE COUNT.
LINE 1: 2 SYLLABLES
LINE 2: 4 SYLLABLES
LINE 3: 6 SYLLABLES
LINE 4: 8 SYLLABLES
LINE 5: 2 SYLLABLES

ALTHOUGH YOU CAN BE AS CREATIVE AS YOU DESIRE...THERE ARE VARIATIONS ON SOME GUIDELINES.

YOUR ENDING LINE MIGHT BE A PLAY ON THE FIRST LINE TO SUM UP THE POEM. YOU MIGHT LIKE TO TRY IT USING A SET METER OR RHYME SCHEME. THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO GROW WITH CINQUAINS TO HELP YOU EXERCISE OTHER POETIC SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES. ENJOY YOUR FLIGHT AND PERHAPS WE MIGHT EVEN TOUCH THE SUN~

EXAMPLE:

WITH WINGS
HIS FATHER MADE
USING FEATHERS AND WAX
HE TOOK FLIGHT TOWARD THE SUNLIGHT.
MELTED!

OK THAT'S NOT TOO GOOD BUT GIVE IT A TRY:

BUT if you'd like to center your text...

Use < > and put the word center inside followed by the /center <> inside as well...

Cheers!

Dear Alan,

Do please remember that this is an exercise forum, and in such a place we play with and experiment with the form.  You'll easily see that my CINQUAIN simply fell victim to a typo.  Kindly leave room for that, rather than declaring it not to BE a cinquain?  Fair enough?

Ever seen a cinquain train.  Why not write one beginning with the last two syllables of the last one posted.  It's great practice.

Here is an example (including the correction of the typo):

Two ewes
commiserate
about a bygone ram –
on all the things he couldn’t give
a dam

from writing out his silliness

Like this?
Then add cinquain
or even two or three:
begin yours with the final word
of mine.

Posted by: Oct 17 03, 12:37

Dear Daniel

Sorry, don't understand. What was the typo ?

I was, while admiring the content, pointing out that the one rule that exists for the cinquain, the 2,3,6,8,2, was breached. I also offered a solution which was very close to the one you took.

Didn't mean to "miff" you. Look at the total number of my posts on yours and you will see that I am a fervent admirer !

[ Now, Alan, see how easy it is to make a typo?  I'm certainly not going to 'correct' you by telling you that your cinquain rules are wrong.  You just nade a simple typo!  I know that you meant 4, not 3 for the second line, right?  *smile* ]

Super pieces, both of you; and what fun!

Grace, your words brought to mind this harsh scene. Please do not think it is meant as a portrayal of the interchanges here!  It's the words that merely triggered thoughts in my demented brain... and yet a not-so-uncommon picture:

Ohhhhhh’d to a Kiss

he rejoined ‘er blew eyes

with his cleaver riposte, smearing

My readings on "Cinquain" have discovered several types of cinquains [ We've been playing with the 'traditional' type. ] but I have yet to find any place that tells me how to pronounce "cinquain."  I know 'cinq' is pronounced approximately 'sank' from the French to the English, but since this is sort of an American haiku, and they've added a 'u' before the 'ain,' it just sort of follows that they'd have pronounced it 'kwain' -- not that I care much, mind you! And I'd be glad to have you give a link to a dictionary that HAS the word, since I've yet to find one myself.  Thank ye!  dunce.gif

Now... while we're talking about following instructions ( which, honestly, I try to do... at least until I find ways to interestingly break them! ), I've shared with many of my writing friends that though I'd been called "Dan" for years, since about 7 years ago, after in important crisis in my life, and recognizing that "Dan" mean "Judge" [ from the Hebrew ], and since I wish not to be one, I'd best be known as "Daniel" which means "God is my Judge." And of course I know that a word to the wise is sufficient, right?

I ode you that explanation.

Dear Grace

This is all Daniel's fault. I posted a single haiku, called Extraction Haiku. Daniel decided that this was a new form of haiku, and started a string by using words from mine to create his.

Seems this habit has spread so far that it has become the norm.

So, as the originator of the original Extraction Haiku (about dentistry ! ), I now pronounce :

In this thread, there is no requirement to connect to the previous !

Now to your lovely effort :

icy
fear grips my heart
words, no longer gentle -- wonder if you want the comma in this line?
fall from your once* sweet, tender mouth -- no middle comma !
like stones

Alan

PS The next one is very nice too !

I bestow you with the new title "Guardian of the commas" laugh.gif

Glad to see this breakaway back to normal cinquain. Whilst I love Daniel's crazy 'carry on' cinquain, it is sometimes good to write individual pieces. When he comes back from his sojourn in hospital he'll wonder what has happened. LOL.gif

Hey Lori,

I love the idea of presenting resolutions as poems. This one is well done. I hope to see some more resolutions blossom into Cinquains...
What I like about this one is L3/L4 focus on the foundation of MM and for the reader that would be reading this without background would clearly see the building up of wordsmithing and resolutions toward honing the poets skills and knowledge.

I thought, perhaps L1, could be better served without a repeat of the title. The title here is perfect and most fitting to stand well on its own. Revealing for the reader the idea of resolutions.

A quick thought could be...

Resolution one

Invest
my timely worth,
sharing the love of words
sculpting, refining as we learn
to write.

Just a thought. Of course I think you can do find much more valuable word choices. Big hugs... I love it!
