The Wufflegrot. Review #1

There is a beast with purple fur;
the dreaded Wufflegrot of Mer,
disguised with much proficiency (Thank you Cathy.)
within a blue as blue can be.

The Wufflegrot is quite a pest;
it has the power of arrest.
It likes to ambush folk like me,
and take away their poetry.

Now it can pounce at any time,
attracted by the sound of rhyme,
then no-one else but you can see
you're just as blue as blue can be.

Though it can boing from any place
its sense of timing's a disgrace;
it makes your metre history,
a missed and misty mystery.

The thing that it most likes to do
is take your Muse away from you;
'cos it will hit you with its gun
and eat your poems on the run.

Then every other shade that was
begins to fade away because
they're sinking in a dismal sea
that's just as blue as blue can be.

So when the Wufflegrots abound
you gotta look for them around
and buy my Wufflegrotarie,
to get 'em with impunity!

Signed: The Wufflegrot Spotter.

Hi Kathy,

ROFL!!! This reminds me of Pooh's Hefflelump! Never seen and yet he's the cause of a lot of trouble!

There are so many possibilities here... LOL I've left a few suggestions for you to use or lose as you see fit. No particular reason for any of them (the poem is wonderful as it stands), just alternate ways of wording.

Thanks for sharing and I'll be sure to watch out for purple fur!!

Cathy

There [lives]{is} a beast with purple fur;
the dreaded Wufflegrot of Mer[...]{,}
[disguised]{which hides} with much proficiency
within a blue as blue can be.

The Wufflegrot is quite a pest;
it has the power [to]{of} arrest[...]
[i]t likes to ambush folk like me,
and take away their poetry.

This suggestion is quite off-the-wall but it popped into my head when reading the last line... 'and feed off newborn poet-tree.' OR 'and feed off of their poet-trees. OR 'and feed off creativity.' I can't even explain why I was thinking that but I thought I'd throw it out there for you to consider. LOL

Now it can pounce at any time,
attracted by [a pleasing]{the sound of} rhyme,
[yet]{then} no-one else but you can see
you're just as blue as blue can be.

Though it can boing from any place
its sense of timing's a disgrace;
it makes your metre history,
a missed and misty mystery.

An alternative for lines 3 & 4...

destroying metric history
and weaving many mysteries

The thing that it most likes to do
is take your Muse away from you;
'cos it will hit you with its gun 'cos it will leave you in a stun'?
and eat your poems on the run.

Then every other shade that was
begins to fade away because
they're [drowning]{sinking} in a dismal sea Added alliteration...
that's just as blue as blue can be.

So when the Wufflegrots abound
you gotta look for them around
and buy my Wufflegrotarie,
to get 'em with impunity!

Absolutely right, Cathy! You are ON to himandher.

There are so many possibilities here... LOL I've left a few suggestions for you to use or lose as you see fit. No particular reason for any of them (the poem is wonderful as it stands), just alternate ways of wording.

Thank you Cathy. I like your suggestions! The more poets who take part in the refining of this bulletin, the greater the build-up of antiGrottedness. UP the deGrottification of all things poetic!

Thanks for sharing and I'll be sure to watch out for purple fur!!

Do. It pays to be alert.
There's a whole different story about the Lert. Somewhere. Anyone know where?

Cathy

There [lives]{is} a beast with purple fur;Lives is good. Well, it's a good WORD! Not a great word to have the beast being.
the dreaded Wufflegrot of Mer[...]{,}
[disguised]{which hides} with much proficiency Yes!
within a blue as blue can be.

The Wufflegrot is quite a pest;
it has the power [to]{of} arrest[...]

LOL
Ah, Cathy, I think YOU can tell folks about that. At this stage I'm just letting people know, in words of one syllable-or-two, exactly wot's happening. The power of arrest is actually what we do, legally, in apprehending someone, so I wanna keep that.

Now it can pounce at any time,
attracted by [a pleasing]{the sound of} rhyme, It's true that it does have great taste in poetry, and will go for the best if it can. But if its hungry there is just a blur and even the humblest of tottering-about poems are glomphed. Even babies' first rhymes are taken. You think about it: how many adults do you hear going "Ma-ma/Pa-pa/ ga-ga"? No. BECAUSE THE GROT TOOK THEIR RHYMES as babies! So 'sound of rhyme' is in.

[yet]{then} no-one else but you can see
you're just as blue as blue can be.

Though it can boing from any place
its sense of timing's a disgrace;
it makes your metre history,
a missed and misty mystery.

An alternative for lines 3 & 4...

destroying metric history
and weaving many mysteries
Haha, aha!

The thing that it most likes to do
is take your Muse away from you;
'cos it will hit you with its gun 'cos it will leave you in a stun'? Ah, it has a gun. I have been tracking this beast for some time, and have info on it. The gun is a twirly kind of splurt...
and eat your poems on the run.

Then every other shade that was
begins to fade away because
they're [drowning]{sinking} in a dismal sea Added alliteration... Drowning is good. Well not GOOD when you are, and neither is sinking but both of 'em have alliteration...see the sea? Anyway, we don't actually DROWN. No, we pop up again, like a sad little duck, to be subjected to Wuffle-abuse again and again again...
that's just as blue as blue can be.

So when the Wufflegrots abound
you gotta look for them around
and buy my Wufflegrotarie,
to get 'em with impunity!

Thanks Cathy. That'll make its eyes water!

Hi Kathy,

I've been reading some short nonsense poems to six-grade students. Well, not too short as I snuck in a Lewis Carol to the most co-operative session.

This will suffice satisfactorily, except I fear it's underbelly theme is writer's block, which no six-grader yet knows. They are as likely to use the twirly gun on any color simulating true purple fur.

Thanks for sharing.

Oh I've been searching for a Wufllegrot spotter - Are you for hire? .. I sure do need one! A Wufflegrot wiffled whut I wrote and well my muse was mutated into dribble. This is a delight to read, it does wonders for the soul; both because misery wants company and it is always nice to know the Wufflegrot gets what other's wrote too! LOL as well as the smile it brings to both heart and face.

Some minor thoughts to consider for some alternative word choices ... and the like, as well as some Thumb's up on sonics and rhymes! Wonderful, fresh and a must read to brighten anyone's day!

Hugs, Liz

Nice smooth intro of that hideous musenapper the Wufflegrot of Mer" wink.gif

The Wufflegrot is quite a pest;
it has the power of arrest.
It likes to ambush folk like me,
and take away their poetry.

The immediate repeat of 'it' in both L2/3 - could be avoided by ...

which has the power of arrest.
It strives to ambush folk like me (omit comma)
and take away their poetry.

Or perhaps ... "It's pleased to ambush folk like me/and take away their poetry.'

Now it can pounce at any time,
attracted by the sound of rhyme,
then no-one else but you can see
you're just as blue as blue can be.

I love this stanza. Especially L2/3 -

Though it can boing from any place
its sense of timing's a disgrace;
it makes your metre history,
a missed and misty mystery.

L2, perhaps ... 'its sense of timing; to disgrace, / then makes your metre history, a missed and misty mystery. ' (just thoughts to alliviate the repeats again of it's and L2, reads as if the Wufflegrot's timing is a disgrace, but in line with the story, I keep wanting to read it that it times it to cause disgrace to the poets poems...

The thing that it most likes to do
is take your Muse away from you;
'cos it will hit you with its gun
and eat your poems on the run.

L2, perhaps 'is steal away your muse from you; and in L3, perhaps 'cos it will stun you with its gun/and eat your poems on the run. " LOL

Then every other shade that was
begins to fade away because
they're sinking in a dismal sea
that's just as blue as blue can be.

Perhaps a comma at end of L1,

So when the Wufflegrots abound
you gotta look for them around
and buy my Wufflegrotarie,
to get 'em with impunity!

HAHAHA...

Signed: The Wufflegrot Spotter.

Well Wufflegrot Spotter, I enjoyed this very much!

Hugs, Liz

Ah. I've been away again, and left this to run on by itself.

Good suggestions, Liz. Heaps of 'em. I will pick them up and click them into place. Thanks.

Yes, the Grot's timing is a disgrace. Well, it WAS, but that was years ago, when I first wrote this, and goodness knows the beast has slorked millions of perfectly metricated poems since then, so maybe it has got -the beat- ( just gimme the beat ...two ...three...four... I mean the beat... two ...three...four... ) by osmosis at last.

There is nothing like a bit of nonsense to bring out the flavour of life, I reckon.

How very sensible of you! Everyone should ensure that provisions are in place for the snucking in of Lewis C, his like and cohorts; there should be a special booth for them in Parliament House and the Vatican, for the promotion of co-operative sessions and the Conservation of Laughter.

Yes Jax, you would. The great kalollomphing thing was after my baby-step metre, but it ran off when it saw I was on to it! So here it is as a monument to way-back-when.

There have been some developments since then though.

This was much fun to read! The rhythms and rhymes are easy on the ear and the story is cute! magictongue.png

I only found a few items I noted below as suggestions for you to take or toss.

Thank you Cleo! I'm glad you liked my little bit o' medicine wrapped up in verse. Mostly, once you start getting blue, the poetry drops out of sight. Now we know why: the Wufflegrot has hit you with it's 'Blue-gun.' Very sad.

Thanks also for your canny suggestions re improvements. They are all good.

But maybe this rhyme has lasted so long because it ain't poifect. The WG doesn't like it as much a it does brilliant poetry. Perhaps it is my decoy. Heh.

There is a poem somewhere about how to dispell a Wufflegrot. I will look for it.

Hugs, The Wufflegrot Spotter.

Hi Kathy.

I'm back again with just a few additional ideas for you to ponder as you wish.

I really enjoyed this one and will look to comment on your other similar poems next. Perhaps we could start a challenge with this kind of theme and see where our muses take us? Hopefully, not to Wufflegrototopia?

Enjoyed!
