Mosaic Musings...interactive poetry reviews _ Nero's News _ Issues with Internet Explorer, the 'Edit' Button and skin views

Posted by: Cleo_Serapis Nov 22 15, 15:18

Hi all,

We are working on discovering why certain members are having issues using the 'Edit' button on their topics/posts. Peter (Imhotep) has done some preliminary research and is asking us to confirm this please (which I can on my side -- I have internet Explorer 11) but I only use Google Chrome and Firefox as my 2 browsers of choice and am NOT experiencing these issues. I was never much a fan of Internet Explorer, lol!

It appears that when using IE, and you click on the 'Edit' button at the bottom of your topic or post box, you are not seeing the 'Full edit' and 'quick edit' options that should show up. Instead, you get the full edit text box - without the word wrap automatically justifying.

Can you please reply and let me know here which browser you are using and please try Chrome or Firefox and let me know what happens? Also, which SKIN are you using as well? That might matter too as the HTML varies from skin to skin.

Thank you!
~Cleo

Hmm. What is going on with Internet Explorer? It seems that all our skins are not compatible with it now!!! All I see, at least from my smartphone, is white and just certain images like the header logo, and a few others.

I'll check with Peter. Meanwhile, using Chrome and Firefox look ok still.

Hi Lori,

It's the opposite for me! When I use Google Chrome or Firefox I see a lot of white and just certain images like the header logo, and some others. This is what tried to explain by pm last night but don't know if you understood what I meant.

However, I do lose my other problem of lines running on and I get a full edit/quick edit option. I'm not worried by the edit as although I don't get an option I can edit everything including topic line. It's the running script that is a nuisance with IE - but Firefox and Google Chrome just do not look right for me (just like what you described for IE). I'm using IE now and every skin I have tried is fine.

This has all happened since by avatar was lost which you said was after the last update. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Strange; Firefox, Chrome and Safari look OK to Cleo and I..

http://www.mosaicmusings.net/screen1.JPG (Firefox)
http://www.mosaicmusings.net/screen2.JPG (Chrome)

Is anyone else experiencing any issues with Firefox or Chrome? Just trying to nail down commonalities.
For those with Internet Explorer, does clicking on the icon in the URL bar that looks like a torn piece of paper (if you hover over the icon it says compatibility mode) help at all? Control-F5 at the same time to force a full page reload?

Thanks,

Hi Peter, Lori, Eisa,

Lori, I already answered these questions at the end of the PM you shared with us all. I checked Outbox and it´s all there.

1. I always use Chrome, but also installed Firefox just in case.

2. I only have a problem with the Edit button. All other buttons work fine.

3. Now I´m using my Notebook, which has Windows 10, but I continue to use Chrome. I just checked and found that I can use my Edit button OK!! YaY!!!

4. Never use I.E.

5. Seems I´ll have to get technician to install Windows 10 on my desktop. I got it free on this notebook. My desktop may be too old for W10...

6. As I have a disabling disease called Fibromyalgia, I have my desktop all set up with arm and wrist supports, far too big for my Notebook. So don´t worry,
I´ll use my Moderator buttons to edit title.

7.I wish I´d never mentioned the Edit issue, only one member asked me for help. Another member told Luce about the 50 posts, he took it well and said
he´d have to do a lot of posting!

8. Please put Amethyst´s name at the end of the forum Admins. Members message her but get no answer. Lori, you should be first, then Eisa, then me, etc. John probably won´t answer, don´t know about JLY, he´s around much more. I hope you read this, John and JLY, no offense mean´t. We´re short of Staff!! Speechless.gif

OK, I´m struggling with W10 as well as Notebook, I hurt all over, shall take a rest. butterfly.gif

Cheers to all, Syl GroupHug.gif

Hi, this is a very strange.

Using IE the icon in the url is like a piece of Blue & white paper with the corner folded down. When I hover over it says ' Drag to taskbar to pin site'

Using Google C the icon is a white piece of paper, corner folded and when I hover over, it says 'View site information' I clicked on this & it says 'your connection to this site is private, but someone on the network might be able to change the look of the page'
It then has quite a bit of info about the connection, which I tried to cut & paste but couldn't. if you think it will be useful I'll copy it by hand, but it will take a while

Using Firefox the icon on the url is a lock with a warning sign and when I hover over it says ' this website doe not supply identity informaion'

I hope some of this is useful.

OK, that's actually quite interesting. Does your URL bar say https://forums.mosaicmusings.net or http://forums.mosaicmusings.net?

Does this look like your screen?

Hi Snow and Peter,

I think I know what Snow is referring to. It's the IPB icon is what she is seeing in the URL bar: .
I can see the forum board exactly the same way (except for the fonts) in safari, chrome, firefox and IE on my laptop. It's my Android phone version if IE that I see a white page with just all the links to the various categories and sub-forums - with the images to the left.
As I type this using IE11 on my laptop - it does NOT word wrap.

Let me re-read your suggestion Peter to me and Snow in PM about adding some HTML to my board header for compatibility view settings -- NO idea how to fix that on my Android phone at all! I cannot do a shift/control + anything with the phone.

Be back in a few!

Cleo

Peter, I think its your security certificate. I am getting errors trying to connect from my phone using IE on it.

Posted by: Imhotep Nov 24 15, 09:59

Yeah I was wondering since we're not supposed to be using SSL on this site at all, that's why I was asking if the URL bar was saying http:// or https://.

That won't fix the word-wrap issue though, just the strange display.

Posted by: Cleo_Serapis Nov 24 15, 11:45

OK - working on the 'white page' issue in the test forum - the fix you tested P is working - I no longer see the white page! YAY! dance.gif and yes, everything defaults now to https://

Just reporting back

with IE I get http: in the url
with GC I get https: in the url
with FF I get https: in the url

With GC & FF I get a screen just like your link above
With IE I get the usual screen as it should be.

Hm, OK, so another tick mark in the "somehow things got marked as a secure site even though it's not yet running SSL" column.... OK, looks like we're definitely narrowing down on a fix, thanks!

I updated the member groups so that everyone at MM can now access the test forum and play with it to see what it looks like for them.

The URL is https://testforum.mosaicmusings.net/ at present. PLEASE DO go in and play. We need to know what you are seeing.

Peter - when I use the original MOSAIC skin in the test site with Chrome - I see everything as it should appear. However, when I view the same skin in IE11, most all graphical images are missing/broken links, like the board header and the forum style images.

Same thing with other skins like stone, -- maybe Stone is a problem one in the test site?

Some are OK - like Tronic Blue, Winter, Refelctions blue, Halloween lite, Driftwood, Antiquity and Autumn harvest, Rudolph, star spangled, Silent Night

Posted by: Eisa Nov 24 15, 15:37

I am using Lavedar & that is ok.

Posted by: Cleo_Serapis Nov 24 15, 18:38

Ok Peter - I sent you screenshots of the Easter Madness skins in testand live for IE and Chrome. Chrome is fine- IE is fine on test site but not live site.

ALso - the other impacted skins (laptop view) are Mosaic (both logo and the forum icon legend images (left side of screen).
The other skin that's missing the logo is itab xmas.

Let me know if you'd like more screenshots.

This what I get when I use the https link. I use IE 11 - nothing else, and have no problems with same excerpt for the long, continuous loine which automatically formats when I click "add reply". No other problems as I can see, but I'm no computer nerd. If it works? I don't mess with it. Not sure if this is an older problem but I just stumbled on it. Hope my input does not further confuse. Very happy with MM as it works fine and dandy for me. Ciao Rhymer.

Hi!

I just updated the test forum with a real certificate so you shouldn't see the "untrusted certificate" messages any more. I also fixed the Stone skin, it was quite broken on the test site. I think your problem with the test site may have been the previous untrusted certificate, if you'd like to take another look now that it's got a real certificate and let us know I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Hi all,

So worked with Lori for a bit and I think we've taken care of the 2 issues people have been reporting (going inadvertently to a HTTPS version of the site that doesn't yet exist and maybe word-wrap while editing in Internet Explorer - looks like HTML commands that were being ignored or processed differently in earlier versions of IE are now being processed by the letter of the standard, just needed to re-code to match... Anyway)

Can anyone who was having a problem please take a look around, post, test things out and let me know if there are any strange things still going on? A link to a broken section would be useful, and PMs directly to me is fine.

Thanks for everyone's patients while we knock these bugs out.

Still having problems with all 3 browsers - I'll pm you.

Posted by: Imhotep Nov 26 15, 17:08

Hi,

OK, I went the other direction and have HTTPS enabled the site (this is good, it adds encryption between the server and you so passwords and things can't be seen and intercepted in transit).

Still working on word-wrap with Internet Explorer...

Note: you may have to clear your cookies and cache to MM first...

I'm using Chrome and am having the problem of losing partial text after editing. I edited (full edit) and closed out of the post, then went back to check and the full text was there, however, I believe it was the next day, I checked on the post and it was in partial text again. This was on "My Love Loves Me Not."

Posted by: Imhotep Nov 26 15, 18:39

Hmm that's really strange... I've not seen text disappearing from a post, just no word wrap when entering a post.

Can you pm me the full poem and I'll see if I can reproduce the issue?

Apologies,

Hi Peter and Lori,

As of today, when coming to MM, I started getting "https" and every time I went to another page, the pop-up window asked if I wanted to show all content (every time on every page). I now have no problem with word wrap in the text box using IE but I think I'd rather have that minimal problem than to approve every page I go to on this now "secure" site. I tried using Chrome and everything works fine including word wrap and I get the normal "http" site. Weird!

Hi Peter,

I cannot recall... what is required to fix that?

Lori

Posted by: Imhotep Nov 27 15, 16:34

Hi,

It's a warning that in this specific case is ok to get and ignore. There are 2 ways to fix it. One way is to not use Internet Explorer and use Firefox or Google Chrome instead (not a bad idea overall, they are generally faster and more secure than IE) since IE creates that warning even though there's no security problem with our site (there could be with others, it's not a warning to completely dismiss unless you know the cause). The other one is to fix the board footers to replace every http:// reference with https:// references (or remove unsecure links). I've done this (you'll see it in the edit footer code where I commented out the offending links until they can be replaced). Specifically, the pop-up is because IE is flagging the non-secure links to other sites from a secure page. It should have stopped prompting for now.

Posted by: Cleo_Serapis Nov 29 15, 19:17

Hi all,

I have been working on the board header/footer html code to resolve the "Only secure content is displayed" pop-up issue in Internet Explorer. BUT, I've only fixed it for 3 of our skins so far: Rudolph, Lavendar and IPSBeyond.

I've tested the code fix in Chrome an Firefox as well - but not Safari.

While fixing that issue, I also am replacing the former 'Motivational Quote of the Day' and 'On this Day' with two new feeds, since the old ones are broken.

I will be spending the next few days fixing all the other skins.

If you have ANY issues, PLEASE PM me and Imhotep ASAP - we will need to know what browser, what skin and what exactly you are doing and what resulted. We try to replicate the issues, but in order to do it exactly the same way, the more information you an provide, the better to problem solve.

Good evening, wave.gif

FYI - I just finished re-coding ALL 37 skins. ALL but our original skin, Mosaic, work fine now in IE, Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Hey Merlin -- still ok in Maxthon? Mosaic is fine in GC, FF, in IE some of the images are broken. Working on that next...

Hi all,

I've also made a tweak to the database backend to hopefully fix the quick edit blows away a post issue. Please PM me if you still have any problems editing a post, or if you find a post that's been cut off. I might have a full copy in the backup and can try and recreate it.

Apologies for the inconvenience,
