"The Cathedral"

Its vaults stand endlessly tall
as if there were nothing but heavens above;
looming large, with many side-chancels,
and small private chapels abound.

The flying buttresses are deemed to add strength,
and the tracery between its pillars, magic;
a sense of incense and innocence pervades the air,
a complex mix of olfactory delights.

There is a strange quality of limning light
in places, a glimmer of gloom in others,
where life’s secrets are slowly revealed
to the quietest listeners and watchers.

Simply decorated with branches and leaves,
in places small flower’s colors peep through,
mosses and lichens; truly nature’s cathedral,
although we usually call it The Forest ....

"What could have made her peaceful with a mind
That nobleness made simple as a fire,
With beauty like a tightened bow, a kind
That is not natural in an age like this,
Being high and solitary and most stern?
Why, what could she have done, being what she is?
Was there another Troy for her to burn?"
WB Yeats "No Second Troy"

Hi Alan !
As is customary with me, I wander in and out of MM like Alice in Wonderland, getting glimpses of another world. This time from home, which means it's been an agonizing wait to arrive here... Can't remember whether I voted for you, but I most certainly remember this beautiful poem about a "forest cathedral" and want to congratulate you !! It's a truly insightful piece and reminds me of many magical walks in the forests of Patagonia, that certainly deserve to be called Nature's cathedrals.
All you people from MM should think of visiting Patagonia one day, it would be a great place for a literary week in the woods and mountains and lakes, for everybody to meet everybody else (or something like that...). It's awfully cheap for tourists right now !!

where life’s secrets are slowly revealed
to the quietest listeners and watchers.

This is lovely, just so, and expressed with simplicity and beauty.
I'm so glad I wandered in here.  :pharoah2
Hugs and congrats again,

Here's an odd thing: I missed this. OK, I wasn't around in Aug but I should have seen it since. Don't understand. Anyways...

You are brilliant at paradoies etc and I enjoy yours. However, I have to say that I prefer still your "original" work. This forest-cathedral poem is wonderful and very worthy of winning anything. Your evocation - of both places actually - is very skilful and most imaginative. I really enjoyed this Alan; thank you.

Congratulations, my dear old chap. Many congrats. Well deserved.

J.
