"Disturbed Sleep"

Always rock strong and stone silent,
she woke one night, distressed
and for the first time, unanchored.
Her thoughts sailed quietly, beyond
newly papered walls and still corridors
of a quiet midnight cottage.
Her smile, unchanged,
curling up at the corners,
hid words which scattered
like frightened birds on empty farmland
outside the window, entangled greens,
all curved, stretched and glistening together.

I tucked her in.
Her hands plucked restlessly through the blankets
to a silent space where voices echoed
away from her, to a destination,
unknown and new.
I could only tell her that morning would come,
and darkness fades, like shadows on walls
reaching to daylight.
Her eyes drank me in, consuming
the ghosts this night had brought
and paraded before her.

She still tends the farm, clutching fiercely
to each shred of independence,
in fiercely cheerful yellow shrubs.
She holds every ounce of dignity
like delicate pieces of glass
on window sills and framed photos
in her empty arms, the right side awkward.
Each night, she floats with her shadows
across gaps between the mountains,
and mists creeping lower every moment
on fragile dreams.

"What could have made her peaceful with a mind
That nobleness made simple as a fire,
With beauty like a tightened bow, a kind
That is not natural in an age like this,
Being high and solitary and most stern?
Why, what could she have done, being what she is?
Was there another Troy for her to burn?"
WB Yeats "No Second Troy"
