Thanks, for Giving
Crowds rush frenetically to fully~stocked markets preparing for Thanksgiving, while she beds down on large contaminated boxes; dimming streetlights her only warmth.
Devoted families unite for a cornucopia of cheerful dining as she ravages a dumpster behind MacDonald’s desirous of just one morsel, sustenance for the night.
Giggling children frolic innocence staining holiday outfits, while she praises God’s benevolence for directing her toward a wearable tattered dress buried in a rotting trashcan deep inside a caliginous alleyway.
Twilight shimmers contentment, loved-ones count warm blessings, as she hunts refuge from uncertain weather, newspaper blankets arrest cold whipping wind.
Holding memories tight, another gleeful holiday passes overflowing bounty begetting grateful cheer, and she glances up as a compassionate stranger passes her a dollar, tears flowing down her numb pink cheek, she thanks, for giving. ©Linda Balboni 2002
