Daniel,

Your post was edited due to the distortion that many photos creates to the thread. As well as there is no critique offered in this post. Please offer a comment or critique.

Thank you for watching over things on the site, Liz.

Honestly, I had no idea that there might be objection to pictures... I'd merely linked them from the places that Cyn's excellent poem made me search to find out more.... so I thought I'd share what I discovered... and was also hinting for her to offer some of her own either here or in another place on the site.

Please forgive me for evidently distracting; I was rather attempting to enhance the reading experience that was already engaging.

Also, I really thought that the fact that Cyn's piece interested me enough to do that research, showed the value of her writing... to increase the reader's curiosity to know more by giving a taste... and in this case, a very large one. Also, as I often do, I expected to return with further comment after the things that I took so much time to find actually sunk in and I could simply see all the pieces in place as a whole. As you know, sometimes that takes some time.

I have, however, now gone back and added a few more comments to those already there, since I have had at least some of that time. I hope that is sufficient for now.

And Cyn, I will be back after others' comments. In the free verse forum, you know me well enough face to face to know that I visit here more to learn than to share my own learning... so I'll be watching.

Hello Daniel,

There is no objection to pictures being posted, but how you had them aligned made it difficult to read both Cyn's original post and your post. If you can find a way to reset specific pictures smaller or one above each other, it would help alot. Actually, perhaps if Cyn has her photos posted with her poem elsewhere, maybe she would like to include the photos with her poem here. That I think would be lovely. But please be careful when posting them that they don't take up the entire screen. It is difficult to post.

This thread was created to move some posts from another thread into something more appropriate - so as not to clutter the poem's thread with unrelated issues.

We need to be careful also with regard to images - Permission is required in order for us to post unless they are in the public domain.

Links to where the pics reside is recommended if there is any question over public domain.

Liz...

Thank you for moving this discussion here! Yes I see what you mean... particularly since two of the pictures that I'd posted originally wouldn't snow up here, though they did in PT for some reason. I've never done this before, but there were so many things that I was unfamiliar with, I had thought that others might benefit too. I had only yesterday or the day before [ the days lately have been so long they melt into each other! ] how to post pictures... so I guess I got carried away.

Lori...

Thank you; I didn't realize that, as there was no attribution of the pictures on the sites, except the ones that indicated the person's name right on the pictures themselves. I'd definitely like to know more about what is necessary, if you have something that would help me. I certainly don't want to cause difficulty ANYWHERE, so your caution is necessary. Thanks... and in advance as well, if you can let me know where I can look for further caution on the matter.

I was very honored that my poem sparked the desire for more knowledge of the area of which I was writing. I quite enjoyed the photos! but understand the need for the mods here to keep things "managed". Thanks as always, friend, for reading and commenting.

Hi Daniel,

Pictures, as well as literary works etc. are covered under the U.S. Copyright Act.

The following is a quote from the U.S. Copyright website located http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html#wwp.

Copyright protects “original works of authorship” that are fixed in a tangible form of expression. The fixation need not be directly perceptible so long as it may be communicated with the aid of a machine or device. Copyrightable works include the following categories:

  1. literary works;
  2. musical works, including any accompanying words
  3. dramatic works, including any accompanying music
  4. pantomimes and choreographic works
  5. pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works
  6. motion pictures and other audiovisual works
  7. sound recordings
  8. architectural works
These categories should be viewed broadly. For example, computer programs and most “compilations” may be registered as “literary works”; maps and architectural plans may be registered as “pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works.”

Please DO read the informative information from the above link I've provided.

Daniel, can you please enlighten me as to what this means?

Snow up here ? If you meant 'show up here', I still don't understand what you mean by this comment. As long as the URL is pasted in properly with your img tags, this forum's software will work the same as any other, including PT. What are the URL's, I'll demonstrate it for you (or if uncertain of copyright, I'll demonstrate some of my own).

OOPS...

Sorry to be so long in responding. I'd forgotten about this post completely.

Yes, of course I'd meant SHOW up. And I do understand about the posting of url's but I know that there are quirks everywhere of which I really have no knowledge. Carly post her own pics, for example over in PT quite frequently from her own site, but occasionally they don't show up. In doing some experimentation, I discovered that changing the referral URL to url or somesuch change of CAPS to small letters, the pictures showed up. Other pictures, however, did not require that change. It's all beyond me, but I know that sometimes things don't translate well from site to site.

Anyhow, sorry to confuse things further with my typo "snow"... I hadn't even noticed it.

Hi,

It may depend on the type of picture you are trying to upload, I've allowed only certain extensions like .jpg for example. The allowable images are: gif, jpeg, jpg, png, bmp, and JPG.

Lori, Let me see if I understand this correctly. If I find a picture some where on the WWW and write a poem about it, if I don't know who owns the copywrite then it can't be posted here? But If I give the URL of the place I found it that can be posted? May be I am dense tonight but I don't understand the difference. Except for the fact of the location they are both the same picture. Thanks Steve

Hey Steve,

It's a better thing to provide a URL and link back to the site that you found the image from for copyright reasons. Just as your poetry is copyright protected and would require your express permission to be posted elsewhere, so too is it the same thing for images, art etc. Only if you have express permission from the author should those sorts of things be posted here, with the proper notation in them crediting the author.
