OK, I'll risk asking the males in our group, who have already shown their prowless, to step aside and see if any of the weaker sex can solve this one. Hey guys, what do you bet. I'm challenging any female to solve it in three days or we can all laff at women's lib!
What if, my little daughter, Your doll would fall and break? Would your crying make it better, Would your crying ease the ache? And wouldn't it be pleasanter To take it all in stride And smile that it was Dolly Who fell and she who cried?
What if it's rope you're skipping , Then the heavens pour down rain? Will the storm recede the faster If you show your disdain? And wouldn't it be nicer, Were you to laugh and smile And so, send cheers throughouit the house And all therein beguile!
Ladies have 3 days to ID the poetess and link to the poem. Men may then solve the puzzler as they are wont to do within minutes.

Dear Michelle, The time here is 5:43 a.m. EDST. I anticipated three days of failure followed by the men jamming the puter to post the solution. Michelle, you have joined a very small group which due to its very smallness is quite exclusive. You also become qualified for a fine Cuban cigar once they become legal here. Congratulations, a superior effort!
Dear All, Michelle has set the standard high but there is no limit on the elation success brings.
Cheers, ron jgd

Hi Ron, Lovely read! I'm one of the "laffable" weaker sex in this case as I've not read nearly enough poetry to my liking and would be clueless. Congrats to Michelle who solved the puzzle so easily!
Hugs, M

Dear Michelle, There are two ways to solve one of these puzzlers. One is to be thoroughtly grounded in the masters' works and recognize them immediately. The other is to do some digging. My intent assumes that most will dig and in digging they'll whet they're appetite for our heritage, learn the ways of the masters and lead the way to the reformation. You are currently the reigning queen here! I expected the men to be the valourous knights saving you damsels in distress. In the past, at other sites, that was the case. Perhaps under your leadership you might muster a feminine group fully the equal of the stronger sex. Cheers, Ron jgd

Dear Michelle, Just between you and me, I did put a gentle elbow in the ribs of the distaff members here. I apologize but claim it was for a good cause. Years ago, I felt the "gentle elbow" as it prodded me in the direction of writing a sonnet. I cherish that effort and am no longer afraid of them. I do hope you'll be joined by many ladies in shining armor who'll pressure you and the knights in the quest of tying poem to poet. And- I'm awaiting your challenge! Cheers, Ron jgd

Hi Ron, From the commentary in your tribute poems, I feel these threads should be moved out of the critique forum if you really aren't interested in having the membership spend time workshopping them to enhance their message. So, I'd like to pose this thought: If your intent is to introduce and challenge us with tributes from bards of yore in a 'who is it' setting, while much fun, they would be better received in either Karnak Crossing (our education forum) as an exercise where "light critique" can be shared or in Plato's Pearls of Wisdom, our non-crit poetry forum. With your permission, I'd like to move these threads unless you do have serious intentions on receiving critiques here in Herme's into Karnak. A benefit of Karnak also is that you wouldn't have the forum rule there of needing to post to 2 other members' threads before posting again. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks Lori

I DIG your intentions, Ron... and you've often forced me to do some digging. I'm thankful for this one, however, that I didn't find it soon enough to attempt the digging, because I'd NEVER have found Phoebe Cary. Sadly, but not surprisingly due to my lack of breadth, I had never even heard of her! I thoroughly enjoyed reading her more-than-hundred-year-old fiesty, moralistic admonition to children (and childish adults). Thank you for the opportunity! deLighting in your stimuli. This is a great place for them... Daniel
