The Birthday Party

Gambia. Alhaji, twenty-one and gay, had been planning his birthday
for months. The guest list carefully locked away; there was that real threat of
decapitation to consider. However, he could no longer find peace by avoiding
life.

how old is need,
how knotted are the corridors
of loneliness?
Imam, there is no angel
with an orange by my bed

His friends gathered by the poolside, each with his past shut in him like the
leaves of a book, eyeing the uninvited guest snapping photographs.

freedom is a fire
that runs like a staircase
up then down—
my lover's lips the color
of soft-skin mangoes

This is very good, Sergio. I love the way the tanka stanzas are alternated with prose. Very interesting. I think I'll have to return to read this again to do it full justice.

Again, a poem -tanka with prose- to meditate about. Always food for thought from your pen, Sergio.

This is not the birthday-party the youth was planning, is it?
I understand it to be an informal gathering by a poolside, where he turned up and took photographs.

But the others must have known he was gay, as he appears not to be welcome.
How hard it must be, and outright dangerous, in some countries, to be transgender, gay or bi.

Your lines are very good, I really don't know which to pick out as the best. It's all good, Sergio.

As with your other poem, I intend to come back to read again. I'm moving house at the moment, and feel very stressed out. Sick husband and so on...

Poetry helps, when one can concentrate.

Cheers, Syl***
PS: In my country gay marriage is now legal. And they can adopt children, or even, how can I say, 'rent a womb' for a price. I'm not too well informed, but they often go to Miami in the U.S. to do the latter.
The Catholic Church is not condemning anybody to hell under Francis, but I guess it'll take a while for church weddings to be allowed. Bye now!

The Lord replied, my precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

"There is no life higher than the grasstops
Or the hearts of sheep, and the wind
Pours by like destiny, bending
Everything in one direction."

Sylvia Plath, Crossing the Water, Wuthering Heights.

The uninvited man at the birthday party was from the secret police. Over the next few weeks many of the young men at the party had to ask for asylum in other countries out of fear they would be executed Sylvia. This is a true story.

Thank you!
Sergio
