Like a blank canvas
And every person that crosses our path
Takes up the brush
And makes their mark
Upon our surface

So it is that we develop

But we must realize there comes a day

And finish the work
For only we can determine
If we are to be
Just another painting
Or a masterpiece..."

"... From time to time
Through the years
The world has brought me down
To teach me about pain

That the World is trying to teach me
But rather about Life
And the not so simple act
Of Being Human..."

Here's A Few .

Little Mary from Boston Mass.
Stepped into water up to her ankles.
It doesn't rhyme now,
But wait till the tide comes in.

Graffitti New Haven 1976.

The cur foretells the knell of parting day;
The loafing heard winds slowly o'er the lea
The wise man homeward plods;I only say
To fiddle - faddle in a minor key

Ambrose Bierce

A sonnet goes eight lines and then
takes a turn for better or worse and
and goes six or eight lines more.
Robert Frost

Poetry is like fish: if it's fresh it's good;
if it's stale, it's bad; and if your not
certain, try it on the cat.

Osbert Sitwell

While Jan (Orion) and I were discussing poetry and critiquing earlier today, she wrote to me these words (with permission) that I find very enlightening. angel.gif

"I see it (poetry) as elevating the writing process which elevates the human spirit." ~ Janet T Leonard

Here a few that John (JLY) sent me recently:

"Life is drawing without an eraser." ~ Unknown

"We can choose to be in reaction and settle on what we get...or we can choose our fate with conscious deliberation and get what we want." ~ Unknown

and a few I found in fortune cookies:

"The greatest of all mistakes is to do nothing, because you think you can do only a little."

"If you have no critics you'll likely have no success."

"A journey must begin with a single step."

There is a land of pure delight,
Beyond the Jordan's flood,
Where saints, apparelled all in white,
Fling back the critic's mud.

And as he legs it through the skies,
His pelt a sable hue,
He sorrows sore to recognize
The missiles that he threw.

~Orrin Goof

An art whose medium is language will always show a high degree of critical creativeness, for speech is itself a critique of life: it names, it characterizes, it passes judgment, in that it creates. ~ Mann, Thomas

two more fortune cookie notes:

You seek to shield those you love.

You cannot teach a man anything. You can only help him discover it within himself.

Here's one offering some of the best advice I've ever received

Never grow a wishbone, daughter, where your backbone ought to be.
Clementine Paddleford

Posted by: Cleo_Serapis Oct 1 06, 08:17

That IS good advice Leigh Ann.

As I ponder those words, I think of this:
"A backbone needs to bend, not break."

I just made that up, but the sentiment is so true to life for me. Whenever anyone would say, "Grow a backbone, Lori!" I would cower, feeling inferior and afraid to speak up for myself (I'm speaking of folks that I've worked with at my day job here), feeling that my character was just ridiculed (years ago).

It didn't take long for me to realize that I was too fragile and insecure, so people took advantage. There are ways to help someone when in a vulnerable state of mind - breaking their confidence is not the way.

Anywho, here is a quote that one of my co-workers recently penned:

"As long as we are willing to learn from each other, the sky is not the limit, it is just the beginning!" ~ Carl Gamberdella

Ten Rules of Thomas Jefferson:

1. Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today.

2. Never trouble another for what you can do yourself.

3. Never spend money before you have earned it.

4. Never buy what you don't want because it is cheap.

5. Pride costs more than hunger, thirst and cold.

6. We seldom repent of having eaten too little.

7. Nothing is troublesome that we do willingly.

8. How much the evils cost us that never happened.

9. Take things always by the smooth handle.

10. When angry, count ten before you speak; if very angry, count a hundred.

When power leads man toward arrogance,
poetry reminds him of his limitations.
When power narrows the areas of man's concern,
poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence.
When power corrupts,
poetry cleanses.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy
