Once I would sit with pen in hand
and set aside a little time.
Then send my thoughts to poets' land,
to conjure up a pleasant rhyme.
Was that the poets' Muse I'd hear
As words would form upon my page?
Need I but write her message clear
to free my visions from their cage?
Such marvels would my mind display;
if I could capture but a few!
Yet when my words before me lay,
they did not hold that wondrous view.
So hard I'd strive to grasp a dream,
my words could not embrace,
that all enjoyment it would seem
was lost in fruitless chase.
So now I sit with empty hand
and seek no more that perfect rhyme.
But send my thoughts to poets' land
just to spend some pleasant time.

Hello Martin. :gandalfg:
What a wonderful poem! How we can all relate (course my muse is a man) !
I enjoyed your pleasant rhymes NO mater what your muse thinks! :operagal: The vision of 'Poet's Land' is very clever! :wizard:
Such marvels would my mind display;
if I could capture but a few!
Yet when my words before me lay,
they did not hold that wondrous view.
This always happens to me when I am no where near a pad, pen or pc to record the thoughts!
So now I sit with empty hand
and seek no more that perfect rhyme.
But send my thoughts to poets' land
just to spend some pleasant time.
That's ok too! :cloud9:
Enjoyed!

Hi Martin,
I need to get into this forum more often. I've found two wonderful poems today!
Once I would sit with pen in hand
and set aside a little time.
Then send my thoughts to poets' land,
to conjure up a pleasant rhyme.
If only it were that easy! LOL

That's what I do. Either I can't get it down fast enough or don't get it down right and then all is lost.
So hard I'd strive to grasp a dream,
my words could not embrace,
that all enjoyment it would seem
was lost in fruitless chase.
That's exactly what I mean! LOL My muse will sit atop my shoulder for a time and then drift away shaking his head.
So now I sit with empty hand
and seek no more that perfect rhyme.
But send my thoughts to poets' land
just to spend some pleasant time.
Enjoyable read!

Hi Cleo and Cathy
Thanks for your kind comments and I'm pleased that this poem struck a cord.
I've not been that long at this game (nor written that much) but I am already having a love/hate relationship with that Muse!
I'm especially pleased that you did not see this as a particularly negative poem, as it was taken to be on another forum - I never saw 'the poet giving up in dispair' until that was pointed to me. The final stanza was meant to show that it's a good thing sometimes to give up the struggle and just enjoy the scenery - I'm glad I'm not the only hopeless optimist!
Thanks.

Martin!
I'm sure we all go through "funks" as I call them.
I, myself, was in one from March through June (my muse took a leave of absence ) and only got back into writing short stories and poetry because of the inspirational stimulus that our members offer bi-weekly in the Acropolis.
Sometimes I find it very helpful not to think of something to write about. Open a magazine, look at a picture or advert and then just go with it without a pre-conceived idea to mull over.
It's also quite aMUSing to hear what other forums think of your work(s). Talk about opposites!
I invite you to our newbie forum if you'd like to share some of your thoughts too...
Cheers!
~Cleo
Dear Maxim,
There's something majestic about your "Poet's Land" and I believe it exists. If it's a state, it's a state of mind, but it's just as real as Heaven and Hell and it's in this life!
The concept suggests to me you could write a whole series on the topic.
Cheers, Ron jgd
Hi Martin,
I'd missed this MUSing on creativity before. Captures the feeling wonderfully and wistfully. :pharoah2

I have never seen writer's block so eloquently described - so much so that makes me wanna have some (more)! I like that idea - Poet's land - where everyone is wearing a poet's shirt and the scenery is completely pastoral. We all have quills in our ink stained hands and lay upon the grass, imagining the clouds to be giants or angels or ferocious beasts! I think I'll try to visit more often! Thanks for the inspiratioN!
Big Hugs,
Nef
Poets land exisits everywhere there is a poet and a pen
Hi MaXiM,
I love your poem----and it is sooooooooooooo true, everywhere there is a poet and a pen----truer words were never spoken. This is a really nice read and easy to understand as we all relate to it so well.
AG
My muse does not allow me to compose on screen she insists on a pad and a writing implement anything from a quill to a stick of charcoal Perhaps she is a little old fashioned.
Hello Maxim~
This is an enjoyable rhyming poem with poetic humor to boot!
Was that the poets' Muse I'd hear
As words would form upon my page?
Need I but write her message clear
to free my visions from their cage?
Some of my best lines and poems have been written on napkins or my hand for future elaboration!
Great words to ponder!
Best,
Lindi
Dear Maxim,
I've just noticed that a secret of the force behind this piece is its supreme irony.
Here is a masterfully expressed piece written by a poet who is in the deepest doldrums
totally aware of the quality of the piece he's crying over.
Write more.
Cheers, Ron jgd
