The Winner of our first annual Mosaic Musings Holiday Classic has been chosen!  holly.gif  dove.gif  blueorn.gif

Here is what the Sollars family would like to say (and I must say, what an original way to say this):

A direct quote as follows from Butch aka Charon.....

It was the fifteenth day before Christmas and the Mosaic Musings North Pole’s Forum had narrowed the special list down to thirteen.  Yes thirteen, when you consider forty-one had been brave enough to attempt to scale the snowy peak of Mosaic’s towering Mount Holiday Classic.

Thirteen brave souls picked up their steamy mugs of wassail or cocoa, gathered before the warm firelight, and patiently waited to discover if their offering would be able to climb to the pinnacle.

At the end of the first day, the thirteen works of art had survived the first treacherous steps up the slippery slope.  All survived, each lay upon the plain gazing upon the bright lights twinkling in the night sky wondering which of them would reach the peak first.

At the end of day two, the thirteen were still together but some were weakening.  Doubt had started to creep into the consciousness.  The slope was becoming steeper, word by word, line by line.

By day three, one had fallen to the side, the snow too deep to continue.  Clutching its taunting words, Make Yourself at Holmes, Santa, slumped to its knees casting off the heavy burden of competition, declaring to the others – “Go forth, find the reward, remember me, for I was well written and enjoyed by many.”

Day four saw The Ultimate Gift given forth, a sacrifice worthy of none other, as it too failed to continue.  Its shape, although no longer able to continue, would haunt the group as they climbed, gone, but not forgotten.

Day five, a day unlike any other, for the group was reminded of one of the reasons they were traversing the path.  Although Jesus’s Birthday is celebrated, the remainder of the group continued the quest.  As one they gathered in remembrance of Him, and decided that upon another day, in March, they would remember Him.

The sun had vanished by day six.  Hidden by clouds, the weather was becoming more difficult.  The group was now down to nine and paused in solace as they realized the Solstice would soon be upon them.

Woe was the seventh day.  Day had become as night.  The snow was thick, pulsating with a life of its own.  The group of eight continued the climb, wondering if the peak would soon reveal itself to one and all.

Sanity was questioned on day eight, as the enduring debated whether It Was Christmas or not.  One refused to go on if the others were not agreement, so behind it remained.

Checking their food rations on day nine, the few brave rivals knew that although rations were the order of the day, The Traditional Turkey would be waiting upon their return.

Six were left; one would not make the tenth day.  As they negotiated the dangerous drifts and chasms onwards and upwards, blindly, each inward in their thoughts, they reflect upon the thought there are those who believe their creator a time long ago, when – Once Upon A Christmas Eve – promised peace and love.

Five golden rings, as the song goes, suffered when one amongst them became slightly burnished as an icy wind blew ice upon their golden words.  Frustrated, the one declared – No More Tales, Please!

Day twelve was remarkable in the fact the remaining four finally realized they were survivors.  Struggling, they had become a team, each dependent on the other, building, strengthening – until … Santa’s Grotto closed down … then there were three.

Three at the base of the peak, each victorious in their own right, but only one could climb first.  Which would it be?  First one, then the other, slipping, sliding, retreating and yet undaunted they battled the elements.  Finally, two continued while one succumbed to the cold, as the sparkle and shine of the Glitter in one contestant’s eye dimmed.

One small mound remained, and yet it was steepest, for there, within its confines lay the coveted prize.  Only one would see its glory; grasp its terrifying and yet magnificent handles.  The two challengers stood tall; proud having made the first venture upon this treacherous mound.  The clouds boiled and roiled, struggling to determine which would be permitted to scale, for the first time, the final peak.  Which would be the champion, the holder of the chalice?  Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, it was A Wonderful Time of the Year for Grandma as she placed her Yuletide Punch upon the peak and became the first champion of the Holiday Classic.   dance.gif

From the Sollars family to all the contestants, thank you for sharing and being a part of what we hope will truly become a yearly classic.  We enjoyed each and every one of the pieces.  As we all read each one, your love and joy emitted from them as surely as if you were here within our home.  It was felt by one and all.  Although difficult narrowing the list down to just four, we somehow did.  At that time the real debate began, for there was at least one person in our family who championed at least one of the four.  The final decision came down to assigning - second and third place picks.  Grandma’s Yuletide Punch was the only one who finished at least first, second, or third on every ballot.

Thank you again and may all of your holidays be joyful and full of love and peace.

The Sollars Family

CONGRATS TO JLY for his winning entry, "Grandma's Yuletide Punch" in our first annual Mosaic Musings Holiday Classic!  cheer.gif

GRANDMA’S YULETIDE PUNCH

On a frigid snowy Christmas Eve
little Johnny and his sister Annie
were in their farmhouse kitchen
eagerly waiting to help their Mom
prepare the holiday treats and snacks.

The cast iron stove was working overtime,
filled with golden brown pies, bread
and yummy pecan chocolate chip cookies.
The warm enticing aroma put everyone
into a peaceful and friendly festive mood.

Mom doled out the duties of the day.
Annie had to wash the cut crystal bowl
while Johnny went out to the barn
to get a gallon of fresh apple cider,
a main ingredient of this seasonal wassail.

Standing around the butcher block table,
they each added a pinch of this and that.
Mom poured the cider, Johnny added the cloves
and Annie mixed the spice, nutmeg, and ginger.
Brown sugar and cinnamon sticks were the last to go in.

This invigorating brew was mixed and stirred
and Johnny quickly put it to the test.
By the strained look on his flushed face
Mom immediately knew something was amiss.
A glance at the recipe gave everyone the clue.

Slices of oranges and lemons were floating face-up,
providing just the right sweet tangy flavor.
Soon Grandma and Pop Pop would be arriving,
and there were still chores to be done,
the thick-handled goblets had to circle the bowl.

At 6PM there was a knock on the oak front door,
Grandma and Pop Pop wearing smiles and carrying gifts,
gave Johnny and Annie the warmest of hugs.
Dad added some wood to the fireplace
as we sat and chatted and ate some snacks.

Johnny took Grandma into the kitchen
proudly showing her the cider punch he helped create.
Grandma took one taste and made an unsightly face.
she reached into her bag, pulled out a fifth of vodka
poured it into the bowl and declared to Johnny,
this is how I make Grandma’s Yuletide Punch.

WELL DONE! HAPPY HOLIDAYS ALL!  holly.gif  dove.gif  blueorn.gif
