Septolet

The Septolet  consists of seven lines containing fourteen words written in two parts with a break in between them, each part dealing with the same thought… to create one picture (to a degree, somewhat like the concept of haiku/senryu — which contain two snapshots of aspects of the same reality).

I stop

I stop
my ears
to hear

your fingers
singing
fragrant pictures,
seeing transparent love

© Daniel J Ricketts 30 Nov 2004

just duet

tenor
gives orchestra
human voice

baritone's antiphon
echoes appreciation
for soloist…
now in harmony

© Daniel J Ricketts 24 Nov 2004

Thank God

thanks-giving
for Blockbusters,
football, turkeys,
tryptophan… or

gratitude for life,
shelter, food,
safe family?

Hi Daniel,

I love the simplicity of haiku, and this is wonderfully similar in essence. Thanks for introducing it and the examples. Each has an entirely differnt effect on the senses and ideas.

Thank you, Fran... I've just rediscovered this form myself and have not yet really gotten a feel for it, but I want to.  I hope you'll join me in the quest? Yesterday, amid working on a series of acrostics during this month, I wrote this one in the septolet format:

LADDERS

Look up
and simply
dare to climb

don't fear
even one step...
remembering
safety

Hi Daniel

How will this do?

Poetry

Look down
and simply
dare to write

not worrying
if no one
follows

A glimmer of an idea?

Hey, Fran!

Looks like I got side-tracked again, huh?  Sheesh! ... and after asking you to join me in the quest!

It appears that you're one word and one line short on this otherwise good start on your own journey into the Land of Septolet...

solace in solitude

wending trails
portend drudgery
on lonely trek

adventure
anticipates
withdrawing peace
from secret account

I've not written one of these for a while... and maybe others might want to give this one a try too?

Here's one I don't think I ever posted (and it's an acrostic... which I normally indicated by making the title ALL CAPS):

Daniel, does this pass muster? It's a double acrostic and the form looks interesting but I know I'll need a lot of practice.

YEARS OF NOTHING

years can
elapse to

suppose I
offer my own,
furthering yours along.

Thanks Daniel!

Hey, Larry...

you have an amazing talent for your double-acrostic poems. That takes a kind of mind-juggling I've yet to figure out. Maybe you could pass on to me some technique or trick you utilize to keep your mind focused on the end-product.

You've hit the mark for septoleting, methinks... so the ONLY suggestion I'd make is changing your title to

YEARS OF NOTHING

deLighting in your ingenuity, Daniel sun.gif

Hmmm... and coming back to this, here's my first attempt to follow your lead of a double acrostic septolet:

SUCCESS NOT EASY

unison to
complete that
common cause...

encapsulating criteria

see synergy

Daniel,

You make it look easy though!

My key: All I do is figure out what I want to and am able to say within the parameters and fill in the blank spaces left by finding just the right word for fit and meaning.

I'll get back to you with my next one.

Larry

Here is another old piece posted here earlier, but appropriate for this season:

Here we are once more with nearly a year and a half without a post so I thought I'd try "Years of Nothing" once more.
