Hello all. As a sort of self-introduction to those of you I haven't met, I'm posting one I wrote back in '02, when six weeks seemed like a long hiatus. It's been almost six years now since I wrote regularly, and I'm in hopes that rubbing shoulders with you here will stir my muse again.

Life Without Poetry

I'd had enough of poetry,
I thought, to take a breather.
Six weeks, at least, not writing it
or, lately, reading either
would surely get my head on straight,
just like a normal person.
As weeks turn into months, I find
my mood begin to worsen.

Without a sonnet, jingle, or
an ode each day -- a keeper --
the peaks of life are not as high;
its disappointments deeper.
The morning coffee's not as fresh;
the eggs are pale and runny.
The music's not as heavenly.
The jokes are not as funny.

The more I hurry past the call
of rhyme with rhythm in it,
the more my heart beats out of time;
off-balance every minute.
So give me back my daily versed
existence -- one that measures
a steady stream to quench my thirst
and heighten other pleasures.

Whoever designed this, 'Glad You're Back' visual made a proper mess of their punctuation - Sorry!

Hello Mary - how good to meet someone I haven't met on MM before.
I know exactly how you felt way back in '02 - As a newcomer to poetry, I feel exactly the same way. How often I've said to myself, 'No poetry this week Leo! There are a hundred things you should be doing; good, worthy things, like polishing the brass, and cleaning the oven.' Instead, I find myself scribbling scraps of verse onto the back of a recipe I'm trying to follow.
The poem you have posted, displays, with elegance, your talent as a writer of very human poetry.
It reflects the warm feelings of someone blessed with a harmless,and very enjoyable addiction.
Now that you are back, I am looking forward to seeing more of your work.
Leo

Mary, Welcome to MM, we do have a spot for newbies to the site and for introducing yourself. Always nice to welcome new writers here. Wow six years without writing, not sure I could go that long. I am glad your back to writing. I enjoyed reading your poem very much, it flowed off the lips very easy, it touched me as a writer. I am not sure what sort of critique you may be looking for, but I didn't see much of anything I would change.
Looking forward to more of your writing, don't forget that you have to post comments on two others poems and wait one day before posting another poem in this forum.
Again a warm welcome.

Steve

Dear Mary,
When I first began verse as a hobby,(2001) you were already sponsoring a weekly or monthly poetry letter on the net. Soon came Poem's Place. PP was the nicest gift I've experienced on the net.
I don't know how much earlier you developed the poetic hobby. It would seem likely much earlier as your words were of high quality even then.
Over the years since then, you say it's been six years,
you've not been posting much. That has been almost a crime. Such talent going to waste!
I was not the only one who cut my teeth under your unintentional guidence. Many are still active and with
greatly improved style.
I'm just so pleased that you're back.
Cheers, Ron jgdittier

Yeah, that might sadden the picture a little if not for the bold, cheerful strokes that convey genuine enthusiasm on your part. Thanks for that, Leo. I will enjoy getting to know you.

Steve, "self introduction" wasn't quite the right terminology. I posted here previously as Nada Lott, but after a long absence I just wanted to come back with an "I'm one of you" statement by posting something any poet can relate to. Certainly not one I consider worthy of time and thought to critique. Thanks for instructing me on the guidelines.

Ron, thanks for the kind words. It hasn't been a complete dry spell, but the periods of poetic activity have been sporadic and brief. I don't expect to return to those heady days of living & breathing the stuff, but I do realize that one doesn't create in a vacuum.

I'll be watching with interest.

Mary

Thanks, Bev. Why did I go? I guess because the wind blew. The question some will be asking now is, "Why did she come back?" Speechless.gif

I am convinced I replied to this a while back but clearly old age is affecting my memory (perhaps I intended to reply)

What a nice way to return, I hope you come back to full strength soon. I too was away for a spell but for different reasons.

Hugz,

Wally
